Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Prodigal Son

By Tuesday afternoon, the financial collapse of Ellison Global had become the lead story in every business publication from the Wall Street Journal to the Chicago Tribune.

The headline was plastered across every television screen in the financial district:

ELLISON GLOBAL SHARES CRASH 78% AS SYNDICATE WITHDRAWS; CREDITORS DEMAND IMMEDIATE LIQUIDATION.

Inside the Ellison Tower, the corridors were ghostly quiet. Half the staff had already packed their belongings into cardboard boxes. The trading floor was dark.

Daniel sat in his corner office, surrounded by empty scotch glasses and crumpled legal notices. The custom suit he had worn with such swagger the day before was now rumpled, his collar unbuttoned, his eyes bloodshot from a sleepless night of frantic, futile phone calls.

Every single one of his so-called friends in the Chicago elite had abandoned him.

The private equity magnates he played golf with at Shoreacres didn't return his messages. Senator Vale had blocked his office number. Even the luxury dealership where he had leased Madison’s sports car had sent a flatbed truck to repossess the vehicle from outside his building two hours ago.

The door to his office swung open.

Daniel looked up with a desperate spark of hope, thinking Claire had finally come to negotiate.

Instead, Madison Vale stormed in, wearing large sunglasses to hide her face, carrying a designer overnight bag.

"Daniel, you idiot!" she screamed, slamming the door behind her. "The marshals just served a seizure notice on the Naples villa! They froze the joint account you opened for my decorating budget! What the hell have you done?"

Daniel stared at her, the last remnants of his infatuation dissolving into bitter disgust.

"Is that all you care about, Madison? The villa? The money?" Daniel rasped, his voice raw. "My entire life's work is being liquidated, and you're screaming about a decorating budget?"

"Your life's work?" Madison scoffed, ripping off her sunglasses to reveal eyes burning with fury. "You don't have a life's work, Daniel! You're a fraud! You told me you were worth hundreds of millions! You told me you ran Chicago! I left a partner at a top-tier hedge fund because you swore you were taking over Vanguard Apex’s real estate portfolio!"

"I thought I was!" Daniel yelled, staggering to his feet. "I didn't know Claire owned the entire trust!"

Madison let out a harsh, mocking laugh that cut deeper than any blade.

"She owned everything, and you treated her like a servant in front of your mother. You are the stupidest man I have ever met in my life."

She turned toward the door, zipping her bag.

"Where are you going?" Daniel demanded, stumbling after her.

"To New York," Madison said without looking back. "To find a man who actually owns the empire he brags about."

"Madison, wait!" Daniel grabbed her arm.

She pulled away violently, her eyes filled with revulsion. "Don't touch me, Daniel! If you come near me again, my father will make sure whatever you have left after bankruptcy is tied up in criminal fraud investigations!"

She slammed the door, leaving Daniel standing alone in the silence of his ruined kingdom.

Before he could process the betrayal, his desk phone buzzed. It was the building's main switchboard.

"Mr. Ellison," the operator said, her voice completely devoid of the deference she had shown him for years. "There is a process server and a representative from the Cook County Sheriff’s Department here. They are serving an emergency eviction and foreclosure warrant on your Michigan Avenue penthouse, signed by Vanguard Apex Trust."

Daniel’s knees gave out. He collapsed into his executive chair, burying his face in his trembling hands as the full, crushing reality of his hubris descended upon him.
