Chapter 4 - The Truth Shatters the Ivory Tower

Daniel lowered his phone slowly, his face drained of every drop of color. The air in the boardroom felt heavy, almost unbreathable.
"Daniel?" Evelyn demanded, rising from her chair, her voice tight with rising panic. "Who was Arthur Sterling talking about? What did he mean, you had lunch with her yesterday?"
Daniel didn't answer. He couldn't speak. His mind was violently replaying the events of Sunday afternoon at the Lake Forest mansion.
Pass Madison the salt.
I know this may feel sudden, but everyone here deserves honesty. Madison belongs in my world.
You brought your affair partner to lunch and introduced her to your wife as an upgrade.
No, Daniel. You’re not finished. And that is the problem.
"Claire..." Daniel whispered, the name slipping past his lips like poison. "It’s Claire."
Madison let out an incredulous, high-pitched scoff. "Claire? Your mousy, quiet wife who spends her weekends gardening and hosting charity bake sales? Daniel, don't be ridiculous! She doesn't have two pennies to rub together outside of what you give her in her monthly allowance!"
"Shut up, Madison!" Daniel roared, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table with enough force to send a water glass shattering to the carpet.
The board members gasped, several of them already reaching for their phones to contact their personal brokers.
"Robert," Daniel gasped, turning to his trembling CFO. "Call Vanguard back. Demand to speak with Arthur Sterling’s senior partner. Tell them we will offer additional equity. Tell them we will put up the Lake Forest estate, the Michigan Avenue penthouse, everything!"
"Daniel, you don't understand," Robert Lawson said, his voice sinking into despair. "First National isn't just freezing our credit line. Because the restructuring failed, the acceleration clause in our existing bridge loans has been triggered. We have forty-eight hours to produce sixty-five million dollars in liquid collateral, or the banks will initiate immediate receivership proceedings."
"Call my father," Madison demanded suddenly, clutching her designer handbag against her chest. "Daniel, call Senator Vale. He has contacts at JPMorgan. He can arrange an emergency bridge facility."
"Your father won't touch this," Lawson interrupted bitterly, staring at Madison. "Senator Vale called my office ten minutes ago. The moment the Bloomberg alert dropped, he withdrew your consulting contract and ordered his PR team to release a statement saying your relationship with Mr. Ellison was strictly professional and had concluded."
Madison’s face turned white. "He... what?"
"You're on your own, Ms. Vale," Lawson said coldly. "And so are you, Daniel."
Within minutes, the boardroom emptied. The directors fled like rats abandoning a sinking galleon, leaving only Daniel, Evelyn, and Madison standing amidst the wreckage of their manufactured grandeur.
Evelyn slumped back into her leather chair, her hands gripping her pearls so tightly the string threatened to snap. "Daniel... what have you done? If we lose Ellison Global, we lose the house. We lose our standing. We will be laughingstocks in this city!"
Daniel stood frozen, staring out the window at the towering Montgomery building across the river. He pulled out his phone again and dialed Claire’s private number.
The number you have dialed is no longer in service or has blocked your caller ID.
He dialed again. Blocked.
He dialed their home landline. Disconnected.
"I need to see her," Daniel muttered, grabbing his jacket off the back of his chair. "She’s my wife. We’ve been married nine years. She’s angry, she’s trying to punish me for Madison, but she won't actually destroy me. She loves me. She’s always saved me."

"Daniel, wait!" Madison called after him, her voice laced with panic. "What about the jet lease? What about the Naples house? I already moved my furniture into the villa!"
Daniel turned on his heel, his eyes blazing with pure venom. "Get the hell out of my office, Madison. You wanted to be part of my world? Congratulations. Welcome to the breadline."
