Chapter 10 - The Reckoning of Madison Vale

Madison’s hands shook so violently that two crystal glasses rattled against her tray. She ducked into the service hallway behind the banquet kitchen, her chest heaving, tears of furious embarrassment burning behind her eyelids.

Six months ago, she had believed she was on the verge of becoming Chicago royalty. She had envisioned herself hosting galas in Lake Forest, flying to Milan for fashion week on a private jet, and looking down on Claire from the pinnacle of high society.

Now, her father refused to return her calls, having cut her off with a bare-minimum trust allowance to prevent further embarrassment to his political campaign. Her credit cards were maxed out, her apartment in Gold Coast had been exchanged for a cramped studio in Rogers Park, and she was carrying dirty dishes at the very parties she used to attend as a guest of honor.

The kitchen service door swung open, and Arthur Sterling stepped into the hallway, holding a manila legal envelope.

"Ms. Vale," Arthur said, his voice crisp and professional.

Madison wiped her eyes frantically, attempting to summon a shred of her former arrogance. "What do you want? Did Claire send you here to mock me? To take a picture and post it on the society blogs?"

"Ms. Montgomery does not concern herself with you, Ms. Vale," Arthur replied smoothly, handing her the envelope. "I am here on behalf of Montgomery-Apex Enterprise."

Madison frowned, hesitating before taking the papers. "What is this?"

"This is a formal settlement of the twenty-four-million-dollar Bombardier jet lease that you co-signed as a guarantor during Daniel’s reckless spending spree," Arthur explained. "As the primary creditor, Montgomery-Apex has the legal right to pursue you for the remaining seven million dollars in personal liability."

Madison gasped, her face draining of color. "Seven million? I don't have seven thousand dollars! I'm completely broke!"

"We are well aware," Arthur said. "Which is why Ms. Montgomery has authorized me to offer you a conditional discharge of the debt."

Madison blinked, utterly stunned. "She’s... she’s forgiving the debt? Why?"

Arthur looked at her with a calm, piercing gaze that made Madison shrink back.

"Because Ms. Montgomery believes in justice, not cruelty," Arthur stated. "Under the terms of this discharge, you will sign a comprehensive non-disclosure agreement, cease all attempts to contact Daniel or the Montgomery family, and complete two hundred hours of community service at the Lake Forest Women’s Shelter."

Tears spilled over Madison’s mascara-stained cheeks. She looked down at the signature line, realizing that the woman she had tried to humiliate and destroy had just handed her a lifeline out of sheer, magnanimous grace.

"Tell her..." Madison choked out, her voice trembling with genuine remorse. "Tell her I'm sorry."

"Sign the document, Ms. Vale," Arthur said quietly. "And use your second chance wisely."
