Chapter 3 - The Traitor In The Bespoke Suit: How Uncle Julian Orchestrated The Disappearance

By the time the sirens echoed up the long winding driveway of Blackwood Manor, Julian Sterling had vanished into the twilight.

Paramedics swarmed the library, administering oxygen and IV fluids to Arthur before wheeling him out on a hydraulic gurney. Four state police cruisers blocked the main iron gates, their red and blue lights flashing across the stone gargoyles of the estate.

Detective Thomas Vance of the New York State Police stood inside the secret vault, illuminating the interior with a high-powered tactical flashlight.

"This wasn't an improvisation," Detective Vance said, shining the beam along the walls. "Look at the acoustic foam panels lining the masonry. There’s an independent ventilation pipe routed into the old chimney flue. Someone spent months building this holding cell."

Daniel stood at the entrance of the vault, watching forensic technicians dust the ironwood door for fingerprints. "Julian had the library renovated six months ago. He brought in his own private contracting crew from New Jersey. He told Father it was to reinforce the subflooring for the antique book collections."

Claire walked over, holding an empty silver tray found on a low shelf inside the cell. "Sedatives. There are traces of crushed liquid lorazepam on this glass. They were keeping him chemically subdued so he couldn't call out."

"Except for his signet ring," Daniel said, his voice thick with emotion.

He held up his hand, remembering the heavy gold ring Arthur wore on his pinky finger—the Sterling family crest carved into solid signet gold.

"Arthur must have regained consciousness between doses," Vance deduced, examining the gouge marks on the inside of the door. "He used the gold signet ring to tap against the lower wooden panel. Low-frequency vibrations travel through wood much better than airborne sound."

"And Leo heard it," Claire whispered, her hand over her mouth. "Leo was playing croquet on the side lawn this afternoon. He said he kept hearing a woodpecker inside the walls."

Daniel knelt down inside the cramped stone vault, his fingers finding the seam in the floorboards Arthur had indicated. He pried up a twelve-inch section of pine subfloor.

Resting inside a moisture-proof steel lockbox was a thick, blue leather-bound ledger and a high-capacity encrypted thumb drive.

Daniel opened the ledger under the flashlight’s beam.

The pages were filled with Arthur’s precise, razor-sharp cursive script. It was a meticulous record of corporate sabotage spanning three years: shell company invoices, falsified maritime shipping manifests, and wire transfers totaling over eighty-four million dollars routed from the Sterling Holdings treasury to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands—all authorized under Julian’s digital signature.

"This wasn't just about the inheritance," Daniel said, turning the pages as his jaw tightened. "Julian had already looted the core capital of the company. If Father had conducted the annual audit next week, Julian would have faced twenty years in federal prison. Kidnapping Father and faking his death was the only way to cover the hole before the board meeting."
