Chapter 10 - The Ambush At The Private Airstrip: Stopping The Midnight Flight To Zurich

Outside Hangar 4 at Teterboro Airport, the rain was coming down in gray sheets.

Detective Vance walked out of the hangar, escorting Julian Sterling in full federal custody.

Julian’s hair was matted with rain, his tie torn, his face covered in dark grease from the aircraft floor. His eyes were wild, darting around the perimeter where news helicopters were already circling overhead, their searchlights illuminating the tarmac in harsh white glare.

A black armored Suburban pulled up to the police line.

Daniel stepped out into the rain, wearing a heavy wool coat. He walked over to the police cruiser where Julian was being placed into the rear seat.

Julian looked up through the open window, his mouth twisting into a bitter, venomous sneer.

"You think you won, Daniel?" Julian hissed, his teeth stained with blood. "The company is bleeding! The offshore debt is already tied to the family name! You’ll spend the next ten years in bankruptcy court trying to clean up my mess!"

Daniel leaned down, resting his hands on the car door frame.

"The debt is in your name, Julian," Daniel replied calmly. "You signed the master guarantees under your personal shell corporations to avoid paying corporate taxes on the transfers. Arthur Vance filed the indemnity paperwork thirty minutes ago. You didn't bankrupt the Sterling empire. You only bankrupted yourself."

Julian lunged forward against his restraints, screaming profanities, but the state trooper pushed him back down and slammed the cruiser door shut.

The siren wailed as the convoy pulled away, heading directly to the federal Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

Daniel turned around.

Standing beneath an umbrella by the hangar entrance was Claire, holding Leo’s hand.

Leo ran across the wet tarmac, throwing his arms around his father’s waist. Daniel scooped his son into his arms, lifting him high into the air, the rain washing away the exhaustion of the last seventy-two hours.

"Did you catch the bad guy, Dad?" Leo asked.

Daniel smiled, his eyes bright with tears. "We caught him, buddy. Because of you."
