Chapter 9 - The Trap at Midnight

“Why didn't you tell me on that first night?” I signed, brushing away a tear.

Salvatore smiled gently, his eyes filled with profound tenderness.

“Because I wanted to know who you were first.”

“I wanted to see if you would look at me with fear or disgust.”

“Instead, you raised your hands and spoke my language.”

“In that exact moment, Maya, the debt was gone.”

“And my heart was yours.”

My pulse hammered against my ribs, wild and sweet.

I stepped closer to him until our chests were inches apart.

I reached up and gently placed my palm against his scarred cheek.

His skin was rough, warm, and real.

He closed his eyes for a second, leaning into my touch as if he had waited an

eternity for someone to touch him without terror.

“You don't have to carry the silence alone anymore,” I signed with one hand

while my other rested on his chest.

Salvatore opened his eyes.

They were filled with an emotion so fierce and vulnerable it took my breath

away.

He wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me against him.

He leaned down and pressed his lips softly, desperately against mine.

The kiss was electric.

It tasted like winter wind, sweet freedom, and unbreakable promises.

For the first time in fifteen years, the deaf king of Chicago was home.
