Chapter 15 - A Symphony of Pure Silence (The End)

Three years later.
A warm summer afternoon filled our lakeside home in Evanston.
The sliding glass doors were open, letting in the gentle breeze of Lake
Michigan.
Danny, now a successful college sophomore, was sitting on the lawn sketching the
sailboats on the horizon.
Inside the bright, sun-drenched living room, Salvatore sat on the plush carpet.
He was wearing faded jeans and a white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up.
Resting against his chest was our two-year-old daughter, Clara.
She had his bright gray eyes and my dark curly hair.
Salvatore was holding Clara’s tiny hands in his large ones.
He was patiently teaching her how to sign butterfly.
Clara giggled, crossing her little thumbs and fluttering her fingers like tiny
wings against his chin.
Salvatore threw his head back in silent, pure laughter, pressing a kiss to her
forehead.
I stood in the kitchen doorway holding a pitcher of fresh lemonade, watching
them.
I remembered the cold, terrifying night at Bellamy’s.
I remembered the shutoff notices on my kitchen counter.
I remembered Brett’s cruel smile when he handed me the leather menu.
They thought they were sending me to the slaughter.
They thought silence was an empty grave.
They never understood that silence is where the deepest love takes root.
Salvatore felt my vibration and looked up.
Our eyes met across the sunlit room.
His face softened into that private, breathtaking smile meant only for me.
He gently lifted his right hand from Clara’s lap.
He signed three simple, eternal words across the golden light:
“My whole world.”
I set the pitcher down.
I raised my hand and signed back:
“Forever.”
The cruelest joke they ever played had given me everything.
A king.
A family.
May you like
And a home built on a love that words could never possibly describe.
