Chapter 14 - The Trial by Fire

Our wedding took place in October at an old stone chapel overlooking the rolling

hills of Lake Geneva.

There were no bodyguards with machine guns.

There were no whispered threats in the shadows.

Only family, true friends, and pure sunlight.

Danny stood proudly as Salvatore’s best man.

He wore a sharp tuxedo and smiled so brightly his eyes squinted.

When the music started, the church didn't just play sound.

Low-frequency bass speakers were set beneath the wooden floorboards, vibrating

gently in rhythm so everyone could feel the beat of the bridal march.

I walked down the aisle in a lace gown that trailed like sea foam behind me.

Salvatore stood at the altar, watching me approach.

His jaw twitched with emotion.

He wiped a single tear from his scarred cheek before anyone else could notice.

When the pastor asked for our vows, we did not speak with our mouths.

We turned to face each other.

Before God and everyone we loved, we signed our vows in absolute, breathtaking

silence.

“I take you as my shelter,” I signed.

“I take you as my light,” he signed.

“In silence and in song, until our hearts stop beating.”

When the pastor signaled the end of the ceremony, Salvatore lifted my veil.

He cupped my face in his strong, calloused hands.

He spoke aloud for the first time in fifteen years.

His voice was deep, rough from disuse, but resonant with infinite love:

“I love you, Maya.”

May you like

The entire chapel stood and erupted into silent, waving hands—the deaf applause

fluttering like a flock of white doves toward the sky.
