Chapter 14 - The Boss's Vengeance and the Maid's Choice

The battle of Queens was over within twenty minutes.
Moretti's remaining enforcers threw down their weapons as the New York police sirens began wailing in the far distance—called in anonymously by Carmine to seize the illegal chemical caches.
Vincenzo and Julianna Moretti were bound and kneeling on the floor of the warehouse, surrounded by Gabriel's men. Their empire had crumbled in a single night.
Carmine walked up to Gabriel, handing him a loaded sidearm. "What are your orders for them, Boss?"
Julianna was weeping uncontrollably on her knees. "Gabriel, have mercy! We can give you everything! The shipping lines, the offshore accounts—everything!"
Gabriel took the weapon, then turned to me.
He extended the grip of the gun toward my hand.
"They poisoned my body, Elena," Gabriel said solemnly. "They tried to slaughter my people. But most unforgivably, they threatened your life. The choice of their fate belongs to you."
The entire room went silent. Hardened mafia veterans looked at me, waiting to see if the maid possessed the stomach for blood.
I looked down at the gun. Then I looked at Julianna and Vincenzo, shivering in pathetic terror on the dirty warehouse floor.
I gently pushed the weapon away.
"Death is too quick for them," I said, my voice clear and steady. "Strip them of every dollar, every property, and every name they own. Hand the evidence of their chemical weapons and corporate murders over to federal prosecutors. Let them spend the rest of their lives in solitary confinement at ADX Florence, remembering that they were brought down by a cleaning girl."

Gabriel stared at me for a long moment. Then, a slow, genuine smile broke across his face.
"You heard her," Gabriel ordered Carmine. "Strip them bare and leave them for the feds."
