Chapter 8 - Crashing the Thanksgiving Feast

“This is a setup!” Marcus shouted, slamming both fists onto the mahogany table. “You have no proof! It’s her word against mine! There are no witnesses! You can't prove a single thing happened in this house!”

“Sarah,” I said, nodding toward the lead forensic technician standing in the doorway. “Turn off the dining room lights and bring in the alternate light source.”

The tactical team flipped the light switches. The grand chandeliers and dining room sconces went dark, plunging the mansion into deep gloom, illuminated only by the flickering fire in the hearth.

Forensic Specialist Bradley and two technicians stepped into the grand foyer, carrying specialized high-output 455nm blue forensic lights and pump canisters of luminol reagent.

“Spraying primary foyer and entryway console,” Bradley announced.

A fine, misty spray hissed through the darkness.

Within three seconds, a gasp of pure horror echoed from General Caldwell and his wife.

The entire marble floor of the grand foyer lit up in a terrifying, ethereal neon-blue glow.

The luminol chemiluminescence revealed the complete, undeniable story of the violence that had unfolded at 4:30 that morning:

Massive, pooling footprints where Chloe had been dragged across the marble toward the front door.

High-velocity arterial blood spatter radiating four feet up the limestone wall near the console table where her head had struck the brass edge.

Long, sweeping swirl patterns across fifteen feet of flooring where Sylvia had frantically scrubbed the floor with concentrated Clorox bleach, spreading the diluted hemoglobin in wide, glowing strokes that coated the entire entryway like a horror movie set.

General Caldwell stood in the dark dining room, staring at the glowing blue bloodstains on the floor. His hands were clenched into iron fists at his sides.

“Mother of God,” Caldwell whispered, his voice trembling with sheer disgust. “You turned this house into a slaughterhouse, Marcus.”

“It’s not blood! It’s false-positive chemical residue!” Marcus screamed, his voice cracking with wild panic.

“Bleach produces a faint, rapid flash that fades in two seconds, Mr. Sterling,” Specialist Bradley replied coldly from the foyer. “Iron hemoglobin produces a sustained, bright chemiluminescence that lasts for several minutes. This is human blood. And we have already matched the spatter trajectory to the skull fractures documented on your wife’s CT scans.”

The lights were flipped back on.

In the harsh fluorescent glare of the room, Marcus and Sylvia looked like cornered animals, stripped of every ounce of wealth, arrogance, and social standing.
