Chapter 6 - The Emergency Warrant on a Holiday Morning

CRASH!

The massive mahogany front doors were obliterated inward as hydraulic tactical rams smashed the reinforced deadbolts off their steel hinges.

The sound of shattering wood and screaming alarms echoed through the high-ceilinged mansion.

“FBI! SEARCH WARRANT! NOBODY MOVE! HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!”

A dozen heavily armed FBI tactical operators in black body armor, Kevlar helmets, and assault rifles flooded the marble foyer, sweeping through the hallways with weapon-mounted high-intensity lights cutting through the luxury dining room.

Tiffany screamed at the top of her lungs, dropping her champagne flute onto the antique mahogany table, the crystal shattering into a dozen pieces.

Sylvia shrieked, clutching her emerald dress as she backed against the limestone fireplace. “What is the meaning of this?! Get out of my house! Do you know who lives here?! Call the police!”

Marcus went completely white, his hands frozen in the air with his champagne glass trembling violently between his fingers.

“What the hell is this?!” Marcus roared, trying to muster his corporate authority. “I am the Senior Vice President of Caldwell Defense! You have no right to breach this private residence!”

From behind the phalanx of tactical operators, Special Agent David Vance stepped forward into the grand dining room. He held a tactical shotgun at the low ready, his gold FBI shield gleaming against his black armor.

“Marcus Sterling,” David said, his voice booming with the authority of the United States government. “Keep your hands on that table or I will put you through that limestone wall.”

General Raymond Caldwell didn't flinch. He slowly set his champagne glass down onto the table, stood up with military precision, and looked at the tactical team with calm, piercing eyes.

“Agent,” Caldwell said in a commanding voice. “I am General Raymond Caldwell. What is the legal authorization for this operation?”

From the shattered front entryway, the steady, rhythmic clicking of heels echoed across the marble floor.

Walking into the dining room, flanked by four Illinois State Police forensic investigators carrying evidence cases, was me.

I wore my tailored charcoal coat, my gold DOJ credentials pinned prominently to my lapel, holding the signed federal search and seizure warrants in my hand.

When Marcus saw my face, his jaw dropped. His eyes bulged with pure, unadulterated shock.

“Eleanor?!” Marcus gasped, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak. “What... what are you doing here?! Why are you with the police?!”

I walked slowly to the head of the table, stopping directly opposite Marcus.

“Hello, Marcus,” I said, my voice ice-cold. “You told me this morning that I was just garbage and an old woman. You forgot to check my employment history.”

I turned to General Caldwell and extended my hand.

“General Caldwell,” I said with professional warmth. “My name is Eleanor Vance. Chief Assistant United States Attorney, United States Department of Justice, Retired. And this is my son, Supervisory Special Agent David Vance.”

General Caldwell’s eyes widened with immediate, profound respect. He took my hand and gave it a crisp, formal shake.

“Counselor Vance,” Caldwell said, his voice dropping into deep gravity. “I remember you. You prosecuted the maritime procurement bribery case for the Navy five years ago. What on earth is happening in this house?”

“General Caldwell,” I said, looking Marcus dead in the eyes. “The man standing across from you, along with his mother Sylvia, committed aggravated attempted murder, felony domestic battery, and evidence tampering against my daughter Chloe three hours before you arrived.”
