Chapter 4 - The Mansion in Oakridge and the Stolen Persian Rug

At 7:30 AM, while the rest of the city was waking up to prepare Thanksgiving roasts and watch the holiday parade, a convoy of six unmarked federal vehicles and four Illinois State Police interceptors gathered at a staging lot two miles outside the gated community of Highland Crest in Oakridge.

Highland Crest was an enclave of ten-million-dollar mega-mansions, manicured private golf courses, and private security guards who patrolled in black luxury SUVs.

Marcus Sterling had bought his four-story French provincial estate two years ago, using a three-million-dollar mortgage backed by Chloe’s engineering patent revenues and a seed loan from Sylvia’s late husband’s trust fund.

Inside the command SUV, David was reviewing the satellite layout of the property with the FBI tactical breachers and the state police forensic unit.

“The house is approximately nine thousand square feet,” David briefed the twelve tactical operators. “We have three confirmed occupants inside: Marcus Sterling, Sylvia Sterling, and Tiffany Ross—Marcus’s executive assistant. Private catering staff and high-profile guests, including Raymond Caldwell, CEO of Caldwell Defense, are scheduled to arrive between 9:30 and 10:00 AM.”

David turned to the lead forensic technician, a specialist named Sarah Bradley.

“Bradley, what is the primary forensic priority?”

“Luminol and alternate-light source scanning of the primary foyer, the grand staircase, and the laundry utility wing,” Bradley answered. “The victim reported that Sylvia Sterling used concentrated chemical bleach to purge high-velocity blood spatter from an antique Persian rug and marble flooring. Bleach does not destroy hemoglobin; it merely oxidizes it. When we spray the luminol reagent, the entire entryway will luminesce with chemiluminescence.”

I sat in the front passenger seat, adjusting my coat over my gold DOJ credentials.

“Remember,” I addressed the team. “We do not breach before the guests arrive.”

David looked at me with a slight, knowing grin. “You want Caldwell to see it all?”

May you like

“Raymond Caldwell is a former three-star Marine Corps general who built Caldwell Defense on an unyielding code of military honor,” I said coldly. “Marcus invited his CEO to this house to secure a ten-million-dollar executive equity partnership. He threw my daughter into the freezing snow so his mistress could sit at the head of the table and charm the board. I want General Caldwell to see exactly what kind of monster he was about to make a partner.”

David nodded to the team. “Staging in place. We move in at precisely 10:15 AM, right during the opening toast.”
