Chapter 9 - The Kidnapping at Midnight

Darkness gave way to a throbbing, agonizing headache.
Maya woke up with her wrists bound tightly behind her back with coarse zip-ties, her ankles strapped to the heavy iron legs of a wooden chair. The air was frigid, thick with the smell of diesel fuel, rust, and salt water.
She blinked against the harsh fluorescent light buzzing overhead.
She was inside an abandoned shipping warehouse. High above, corrugated steel sheets rattled in the coastal wind. Through the broken windows, she could hear the rhythmic crashing of ocean waves against concrete pilings.
The coastal highway.
Standing ten feet away from her was a man in an expensive Italian camel-hair coat, smoking a thick cigar. He had greasy silver hair slicked back and a cruel, predatory grin.
Lorenzo.
Beside him stood Leo, his cheek bandaged where Maya had clawed him, looking nervous as he checked his watch repeatedly.
"Ah, the songbird is awake," Lorenzo purred, taking a slow drag of his cigar and blowing a cloud of blue smoke into Maya’s face.
Maya coughed, turning her head away with disgust. "Arthur is going to find you. And when he does, you will beg for a quick death."
Lorenzo laughed—a harsh, grating sound that bounced off the metal walls. "Arthur Cole is a broken dog chasing a ghost. For three years, he sat in his ivory tower doing nothing. We all thought he lost his teeth when Sarah took that dive off the cliff."
He stepped closer, using the tip of his hot cigar to tilt Maya’s chin upward. Maya glared at him, refusing to flinch.
"And now look at him," Lorenzo sneered. "Risking his entire syndicate, moving half his garrison, all for a little tramp who cleans bar glasses. You are his weakness, my dear. In two hours, Cole will trade all the North Ridge territory, the ports, and his grandfather’s empire just to get you back in one piece."
"He won't trade," Maya said, her voice steady, burning with absolute faith. "He won't negotiate with you. He's going to slaughter you."
Lorenzo’s grin faded, replaced by a cold, sadistic sneer. He raised his hand to strike her, but before his palm could connect, the massive metal doors of the warehouse blew inward with the force of a thunderclap.
The explosion tore the hinges from the concrete walls, sending a shockwave that knocked Leo to the floor and shattered every overhead light into raining glass.
Emergency spotlights mounted on three armored black SUVs illuminated the warehouse in blinding, stadium-grade white light.
The gunfight didn't last three minutes.
Arthur’s strike team moved with surgical, terrifying precision. Heavily armed men in tactical gear poured through the breach, laying down a wall of suppressing fire that cut down Lorenzo’s guards before they could even unholster their weapons.
Through the smoke and the strobe of muzzle flashes, a lone figure walked forward.
Arthur Cole wore no body armor. He held a high-caliber automatic rifle at his hip, firing single, calculated shots with terrifying calm. His charcoal coat billowed behind him like the wings of an avenging demon. His face was completely splattered with crimson, his dirty-ice eyes burning with an unholy, incandescent fury that froze the blood in Lorenzo’s veins.
"Kill her! Kill the girl!" Lorenzo screamed in terror, scrambling backward behind a stack of shipping crates.
Leo scrambled to his feet, pulling his pistol and aiming it directly at Maya’s temple.
"Don't move, Cole! I'll blow her brains out!" Leo shrieked, his hands shaking violently.
Arthur didn't stop walking. He didn't slow his pace.
"You took three seconds too long to pull that trigger, Leo," Arthur said.
Before Leo could register the words, a single shot cracked from the high rafters above. A sniper’s round tore through Leo’s shoulder, spinning him around.
In the next heartbeat, Arthur was upon him.
Arthur dropped his rifle, grabbed Leo by the throat with one hand, and slammed him into the concrete pillar with enough force to crack the stone. With his other hand, Arthur drew a combat blade and drove it straight through Leo’s gun hand, pinning it to the wooden crate beside him.
Leo screamed in agony.
Arthur leaned in close, his voice a lethal whisper. "For Paulie."
Arthur twisted the blade, pulled it free, and struck Leo across the temple with the heavy butt of his knife, dropping the traitor unconscious to the floor.
Arthur turned toward Maya.
The lethal, demonic fury on his face vanished in an instant, replaced by an expression of pure, breathless relief. He dropped to his knees in front of her chair, his bloody hands moving with infinite tenderness as he sliced the zip-ties from her wrists and ankles.
"Maya," Arthur gasped, his voice breaking. "Are you hurt? Did they touch you?"
Maya threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his blood-stained coat, sobbing with overwhelming relief. "Arthur... you came... you came for me..."
May you like
Arthur wrapped his powerful arms around her, crushing her against his chest, burying his face in her dark hair as he shook with repressed terror.
"I will always come for you," Arthur vowed, his voice thick with tears. "Always."
