Chapter 8 - The Viper in the Ranks

The shrill wail of the security sirens shattered the tense standoff in the lavender room.

In an instant, the emotional conflict was swept away by lethal instinct. Arthur didn't hesitate. He grabbed Maya by the arm, pulling her behind his broad frame as he drew a sleek black Glock from his shoulder holster with fluid, terrifying speed.

"Stay behind me," Arthur ordered, his voice dropping into the icy command that had ruled the city for six years.

The heavy thud of automatic weapons fire echoed from the south gates, followed by the muffled concussive blasts of flash grenades.

Paulie came sliding around the corridor corner, an assault rifle clutched in his hands, his face smeared with soot. "Boss! It’s Lorenzo! They breached the southern tree line with three armored vans! They have heavy firepower—military-grade stuff!"

"How did they get past the thermal sensors on the outer ridge?" Arthur demanded, moving swiftly down the hallway while shielding Maya with his body.

Paulie’s eyes darkened with rage. "Inside job. Someone disabled Sector 4 ten minutes ago. It had to be Leo. The kid isn't at his post."

Arthur’s jaw set like iron. A blank stare settled over his face—the terrifying, dead expression that signaled an absolute death sentence.

"Get Maya to the underground panic room," Arthur commanded. "Take two men. Lock the vault from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me."

"No!" Maya cried, grabbing Arthur’s forearm. "Arthur, don't go out there! There are too many of them!"

Arthur stopped at the head of the grand staircase. Below, the sounds of splintering wood and shouting men filled the foyer. Glass from the grand chandelier rained down onto the marble floor as bullets tore through the upper windows.

Arthur looked down at Maya. In that split second, amidst the chaos and the gunfire, his dirty-ice eyes softened with an intensity that took her breath away. He reached up, cupping her cheek with his gloved hand.

"Sarah was my past, Maya," Arthur said, his voice clear above the roar of battle. "She died because I was too weak to protect her. But you... you are my life. And I will burn this entire city to ash before I let them touch a single hair on your head."

He leaned down and kissed her fiercely, a taste of smoke and unyielding promise.

"Go with Paulie," he ordered.

Before she could protest, Paulie grabbed her shoulder, pulling her down the narrow service staircase toward the basement, while Arthur turned, racked the slide of his weapon, and descended into the smoke-filled foyer like an angel of death.

Down in the concrete substructure of the mansion, Paulie shoved Maya into a reinforced steel room lined with communication monitors and emergency rations.

"Stay here, Miss Lin! Lock the door behind me!" Paulie yelled, turning back toward the hallway to reinforce his men.

"Paulie, wait!"

A sharp crack echoed through the concrete hallway.

Paulie gasped, his massive frame shuddering. He looked down in disbelief at the red bloom spreading across his white shirt. He fell forward onto his knees with a heavy thud.

Standing at the end of the corridor, holding a suppressed pistol with smoke curling from the barrel, was Leo.

"Sorry, Paulie," Leo sneered, stepping over the fallen lieutenant. "Lorenzo offered five million and the South Docks. Arthur Cole’s reign is over."

Maya screamed, rushing to pull the heavy vault door shut, but Leo was too fast. He slammed his combat boot into the frame, wedging it open, and forced his way inside.

He grabbed Maya by the hair, dragging her away from the control console despite her frantic kicks and clawing nails.

"Let me go! Arthur will kill you! He will tear you apart!" she shrieked, scratching a deep bloody furrow down Leo’s cheek.

May you like

Leo cursed and struck her across the face with the back of his hand. Maya’s head snapped back, stars exploding behind her eyes, and she collapsed onto the cold concrete floor, her vision fading into blackness as Leo shoved a rag soaked in chloroform against her mouth and nose.

"He has to find you first, songbird," Leo whispered coldly.
