Chapter 15 - The Melody That Never Fades

Two years later.

The morning sun broke over the rolling hills of the North Ridge, painting the stone terraces of the Rookery in warm shades of gold and amber.

The heavy, foreboding mansion was unrecognizable from the silent fortress it had once been. French doors stood wide open to let the gentle summer breeze flow through the sunlit corridors. The sweet scent of blooming jasmine and honeysuckle drifted in from the gardens, mingling with the rich aroma of fresh cinnamon rolls baking in the kitchen.

Down by the grand Steinway piano in the sunroom, Maya sat on the polished bench, her dark hair tumbling over the shoulders of a soft white linen sundress.

In her lap sat an eight-month-old baby boy with thick dark hair, chubby cheeks, and bright, curious eyes that were the exact, striking color of clear ocean blue.

"Come on, Leo," Maya giggled softly, gently guiding the baby’s tiny fingers to press the ivory keys. "Show Daddy how you play middle C."

A soft plink echoed through the room.

The baby let out a delighted, gurgling squeal, clapping his tiny hands together.

Footsteps approached from the terrace.

Arthur walked into the sunroom, wearing rolled-up khakis and a soft blue linen shirt, holding a basket of fresh strawberries he had just picked from Evelyn’s garden down by the cottage.

He looked completely at peace. The lines of violence and grief had been permanently erased from his face, replaced by the radiant, glowing contentment of a man who had everything he could ever desire.

"Is my son already composing symphonies before his first birthday?" Arthur asked, setting the basket on the table and walking over to the piano.

"He takes after his father," Maya teased, looking up at her husband with adoration. "Demanding, stubborn, and entirely obsessed with music."

Arthur laughed—a rich, deep, joyful sound that filled the room—and leaned down to kiss Maya deeply on the lips before scooping his giggling son into his powerful arms.

He tossed the baby gently into the air, catching him securely against his broad chest as little Leo shrieked with laughter, grabbing at Arthur’s shirt collar with chubby fists.

"You are the master of this house, little man," Arthur murmured, nuzzling the baby’s soft cheek. "Whatever you want, it's yours."

"Don't spoil him too much, Mr. Cole," Maya said with a mock scowl, resting her hands on the piano keys. "Paulie already bought him a miniature electric car that takes up half the garage."

"Paulie is a proud godfather," Arthur smiled, stepping behind Maya and wrapping his free arm around her shoulders, pulling her against his side.

Together, the three of them looked out through the arched glass doors at the peaceful valley below.

The city in the distance was thriving, peaceful, and free from the grip of the underground syndicates. The coastal highway sparkled in the morning sun, no longer a place of tragedy, but a scenic road leading to new adventures.

Maya rested her fingers on the keys and began to play a soft, gentle lullaby—the very same melody she had hummed on the floor of the Brass Nickel on the night their lives had collided.

Arthur closed his eyes, resting his chin lightly on the crown of Maya’s head, listening to the pure, angelic voice of his wife as she sang to their son.

Three years of silence had been shattered by a single song.

And now, surrounded by love, family, and a future brighter than the morning sun, Arthur Cole knew that the music in his heart would never fade away.
