Chapter 13 - The Grand Gala Ambush

The music swelled, and for an hour, the grand ballroom belonged entirely to Arthur and Maya.
Every eye followed them. The fear that had once defined Arthur Cole’s name had evolved into something far more enduring: awe. He was a man who had conquered the darkness of his city, faced down his worst demons, and emerged on the other side with his humanity restored.
At eleven o'clock, Arthur guided Maya toward the hotel’s private rooftop terrace, overlooking the sparkling skyline of the city.
The cool night breeze rustled the silk of her crimson gown. High above the streets, the noise of traffic was a distant whisper, leaving only the sound of their breathing and the soft rustle of leaves in the terrace gardens.
"It's breathtaking," Maya said, leaning against the marble railing, looking out at the glittering lights of the harbor.
"It is," Arthur agreed, standing behind her, his arms wrapping gently around her waist. "For years, I looked at this city and saw only a battlefield. A place where you either kill or be killed. But tonight, standing here with you... I see a home."
Arthur turned her around to face him.
He reached into his tuxedo pocket and pulled out a small, black velvet box.
Maya’s breath caught in her throat. Her hands flew to her mouth, tears of overwhelming joy instantly springing to her eyes.
Arthur Cole—the man who had never knelt before any king, cartel, or judge—dropped slowly onto one knee on the marble terrace.
He opened the box, revealing a flawless, brilliant-cut three-carat diamond ring flanked by two sapphires the color of a tranquil ocean.
"Maya Lin," Arthur said, his voice trembling with an emotion so deep it shook his entire frame. "You found me when I was nothing but stone and ashes. You brought music back into my silent world, and you taught me that my heart was still capable of beating. I don't want another day, another breath, or another lifetime without you by my side. Will you marry me?"
"Yes!" Maya cried, throwing her arms around his neck, pulling him up into a passionate, breathless kiss. "Yes, Arthur! A thousand times yes!"
Arthur slipped the ring onto her finger, lifting her into the air and spinning her around as their laughter echoed into the starry night sky.
Suddenly, the terrace glass doors shattered behind them.
Three men in black tactical gear burst through the opening, assault rifles raised. They were remnants of Lorenzo’s old mercenary cell, desperate, rogue gunmen seeking one final act of suicidal vengeance against the Cole family.
"Arthur Cole!" the lead gunman screamed, leveling his weapon.
In a fraction of a second, Arthur’s protective instinct took over. He spun Maya behind him, shielding her entirely with his body, his hand reaching for the concealed weapon beneath his tuxedo jacket.
Crack! Crack!
Two gunshots rang out—not from the assassins, but from the terrace entrance.
Paulie, wearing a tuxedo with his arm fully healed, stepped through the shadows holding a smoking service pistol, followed by six armed Cole security guards. The three mercenaries dropped to the marble floor, neutralized before they could pull a single trigger.
"All clear, Boss," Paulie said, lowering his weapon with a grim, satisfied nod. "Security swept the perimeter. The last of Lorenzo’s rats have been exterminated."
Arthur didn't even look at the fallen men. His eyes were frantically scanning Maya from head to toe, his hands trembling as he checked her arms and face.
"Maya! Are you hurt? Did a bullet graze you?"
Maya looked at the fallen assassins, then looked up into the desperate, loving eyes of the man who had placed himself directly in the line of fire without a second thought.
She smiled gently, placing her hand over his pounding heart.
"I'm fine, Arthur," she whispered, leaning up to kiss his cheek. "With you, I will always be safe."
May you like
Arthur let out a ragged breath, wrapping his arms around her and holding her tightly against his chest under the starlit sky.
"The war is over, Maya," Arthur vowed into her hair. "Tonight, the underground dies. Tomorrow, our life begins."
