Chapter 3 - The Police Called Me a Killer, but the Dead Patient’s File Carried My Forged Signature

I raised both hands.

“I'm a nurse,” I shouted.

The officer pointed at the van.

“Step away from the patient.”

Gabriel's breathing was getting worse.

I couldn't obey.

“He needs emergency care.”

The officer approached.

His badge read REYES.

“Who are you transporting?”

“Gabriel Vale.”

His expression shifted.

Then he looked inside.

“That's impossible.”

“Why?”

“Gabriel Vale died last Tuesday.”

I stared at him.

The patient under my hands was alive.

His chest rose.

His pulse beat against my fingers.

Someone had declared him dead.

Reyes called for an ambulance.

Vincent's name appeared on his phone.

He declined the call.

“Tell me what's happening,” he said.

Mara passed him her notebook.

He turned several pages.

His jaw tightened.

“This isn't enough to clear you.”

“Then find the originals,” I said.

Reyes hesitated.

A second officer reached for my wrists.

Gabriel opened his eyes.

“Don't arrest her.”

Everyone froze.

He struggled to breathe.

“Vincent signed the orders.”

“Which orders?” Reyes asked.

Gabriel swallowed.

“The ones that killed my father.”

A siren rose behind us.

Reyes motioned toward the ambulance.

“Get him inside.”

I climbed aboard.

The medic handed me oxygen tubing.

Gabriel squeezed my hand.

“There's a recording,” he whispered.

“Where?”

“Inside the capsule.”

I looked at the metal object.

Its surface carried a tiny seam.

Gabriel shut his eyes.

“Find my sister.”

I had never heard him mention one.

“What's her name?”

He managed two words.

“Clara Vale.”

May you like

Mara dropped her notebook.

Because Clara Vale was the patient I had supposedly murdered.
