Chapter 14 - The Mansion Opened Its Doors Again, and the First Visitor Carried a Letter From the Past

The day before the center opened, I found a box of letters in Gabriel’s study.

They were written by families who had found missing relatives.

Some thanked us.

Others asked questions we couldn't answer.

I read them until sunset.

Gabriel sat beside me.

“We can't repair every year they lost,” he said.

“I know.”

“Does that make this feel smaller?”

“No,” I answered.

“It makes it real.”

The next morning, Mara arrived carrying a stack of applications.

Clara brought the first volunteer roster.

My mother brought a tin of cookies.

I watched them arrange chairs in a room that once held secrets.

We couldn't change the past.

But we could refuse to repeat it.

Gabriel held the door for the first visitor.

And for the first time, nobody needed permission to leave.
