Reyes stared at the login report.
His face hardened.
“Don't tell anyone else.”
He checked the access number.
It belonged to Detective Nolan Price.
Price had handled Mara's disappearance.
He had also signed Clara's death report.
Reyes quietly removed him from the case.

His desk sat empty.
His phone was disconnected.
A warrant followed.

By sunset, investigators had found his car.
It was parked near the river.
Inside lay a folder of photographs.
Every photograph showed me.
At work.
At home.
Outside the hospital.
I stared at them through an evidence sleeve.
Someone had watched me for months.
Gabriel stood beside me.
“I'm sorry,” he said.
“You didn't take these.”
“No, but my family brought this into your life.”
I looked at him.
“Your family also helped me find my mother.”
He said nothing.
That was one thing I liked about him.
He didn't rush to fill silence.
Reyes returned with new information.
Price had rented a storage unit.
Inside were cash bundles and passports.
One passport carried my father's photograph.
The name was different.
The expiration date was recent.
For the first time, I believed he might truly be alive.

Then Reyes showed me the border record.
My father had entered the country two days earlier.
