Chapter 12 - Vincent’s Trial Began With a Lie, Until Mara Walked Into Court Carrying the Missing Ledger

The courtroom was packed.

Reporters crowded the back benches.

Vincent sat beside his attorneys.

He looked perfectly composed.

The prosecution presented financial records.

Then false death certificates.

Then testimony from survivors.

Vincent's lawyer challenged everything.

He claimed the documents were fabricated.

He claimed witnesses had coordinated stories.

He claimed Mara had disappeared voluntarily.

Mara took the stand.

Her voice shook at first.

Then she saw her mother in the gallery.

She straightened.

“I hid because he threatened to kill her.”

She described the basement.

The locked door.

The records she had copied.

Then she opened a ledger.

Every transfer had a handwritten authorization.

Vincent's signature appeared repeatedly.

His attorney objected.

The judge allowed the foundation testimony to continue.

The forensic examiner confirmed the handwriting analysis.

I watched Vincent's expression change.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

Gabriel testified next.

He described his wounds.

The concealed capsule.

His efforts to gather evidence.

He also admitted mistakes.

He had trusted people he shouldn't have.

He had waited too long.

The courtroom went quiet.

When I testified, I told the truth.

I described the incision.

The gun.

The missing nurse.

The forged signature.

Then I said something I hadn't planned.

“Patients aren't paperwork.”

I looked toward Vincent.

“They're people someone is waiting for.”
