Chapter 7 - Secrets Whispered in the Garden District: When Loyalty is Tested

"This is an ambush!" Bellarose hissed, gripping the back of his chair, his chest heaving. "Carmine, do you know who this girl is? She’s Emmett Fontaine’s daughter! Her father was an unstable lunatic who burned his own bakery for insurance money!"
The silence in the room became absolute.
Carmine set his fork down with a slow, deliberate clinking sound. He rose to his full height. Though Bellarose was older and heavier, Carmine’s presence dominated the room like an approaching storm.
"Emmett Fontaine never touched a match in his life," Carmine said, stepping around the table until he was standing between Bellarose and Nell. "The insurance money never went to Fontaine. It went into an offshore account held by a shell company registered in Panama under the name Belle-Rose Holdings."
The two port commissioners and the judge exchanged nervous, alarmed glances. They had come for an evening of luxury, only to find themselves sitting in the middle of a mafia tribunal.
Bellarose swallowed hard, looking toward the side exits. Benny Santino was already leaning against the primary doorway, his jacket unbuttoned, revealing the shoulder holster beneath.
"You're making a mistake, Orsini," Bellarose spat, trying to salvage his bravado. "I sit on the city zoning board. I control the permits for your riverfront expansion. If you think you can humiliate me over a dead baker's recipe, you'll find your docks shut down by Monday morning."
"The docks will operate as they always have," Carmine replied calmly. "Because by Monday morning, Councilman, you will no longer be on the zoning board. You will be in federal custody."
Carmine made a slight motion with his index finger. Benny stepped forward and handed the district judge a thick leather dossier filled with bank statements, wire transfers, and sworn affidavits from the retired fire chief whom Silvio Orsini had bribed eight years ago.
The judge opened the dossier, scanned the first three pages, and slowly closed it. He looked at Bellarose with cold detachment.
"Conrad," the judge said softly. "I suggest you call your attorney immediately."
Bellarose turned purple with rage. He glared at Nell with pure venom. "You think you've won, little girl? You and this thug? You haven't seen the last of me."
He stormed out through the side entrance, followed quickly by the shaken commissioners.
When the room cleared, leaving only Carmine, Nell, and the spilled red wine on the table, Nell felt her knees finally give out. Carmine was there instantly, his strong hands catching her by the elbows before she could touch the floor.
"Steady," Carmine whispered, his voice warm and steady against her ear. "It's done."
May you like
"He's going to retaliate," Nell breathed, looking up into Carmine’s face. "Men like him don't just surrender."
"Let him try," Carmine said, his grip lingering on her arms just a second longer than necessary. "In New Orleans, he has money. But I have the city."
