Chapter 14 - The Fall of Conrad Bellarose: Justice Served on a Silver Platter

One month later, the trial of Conrad Bellarose became the biggest scandal in Louisiana history.

With the district judge presiding and Carmine’s mountains of unimpeachable financial records presented before the grand jury, Bellarose’s entire empire was dismantled piece by piece. His assets were frozen, his political allies abandoned him, and the court awarded twenty million dollars in punitive damages to the victims of his predatory real estate schemes.

The headline on the front page of the Times-Picayune read:

"COUNCILMAN SENTENCED TO 45 YEARS; STOLEN PROPERTIES RETURNED TO HISTORIC OWNERS."

On the day the verdict was read, Nell took her father to Royal Street in his wheelchair.

The old wooden building that had once been reduced to charred timbers was now completely restored. Fresh white paint adorned the historic Creole facade, with dark green shutters and overflowing wrought-iron flower boxes filled with blooming jasmine.

Above the entrance hung a magnificent, hand-carved oak sign:

FONTAINE & ORSINI: ARTISAN PATISSERIE & BAKERY

Emmett looked up at the sign. A sudden, radiant spark of clarity illuminated his gentle face. He reached up with a trembling hand and pointed to the carved golden lettering.

"Nell..." Emmett whispered, his voice clear and strong for the first time in years. "The bakery... it’s open for the morning bake."

Nell dropped to her knees beside his wheelchair, burying her face in her father's lap as happy tears streamed down her cheeks. "Yes, Dad. It's open. It's ours again."

Carmine stood behind them, his hands in his pockets, a rare, genuine smile gracing his handsome face as he watched the woman he loved reclaim her rightful heritage.
