Chapter 11 - A Trap Set in Sugar and Iron: Unmasking the Syndicate’s Betrayal

By Thursday evening, the noose around Conrad Bellarose was tightening.
Carmine had orchestrated a masterclass in economic warfare. Using the Orsini family’s immense leverage over shipping lanes and supply chains, Carmine blocked every single food and wine shipment headed to Bellarose’s eleven luxury restaurants. Without fresh produce, imported meats, or licensed alcohol, Bellarose’s empire began bleeding hundreds of thousands of dollars a day.
Desperate, Bellarose called for an emergency meeting at an abandoned sugar refinery near Chalmette—neutral ground outside the jurisdiction of the New Orleans police.
"He wants to negotiate a surrender," Benny reported, his arm in a sling as he reviewed the surveillance photos with Carmine in the study.
"He doesn't negotiate," Nell said, stepping into the study with a pot of fresh coffee. "He’s a cornered animal. When my father tried to negotiate eight years ago, Bellarose brought kerosene."
Carmine looked up from his maps, admiring her sharp intuition. "She's right. It's an ambush. He has twelve hired mercenaries waiting inside the refinery."
"Then why are we going?" Benny asked.
"Because we aren't going to negotiate," Carmine replied coldly. "We're going to shut him down forever."
Nell walked up to Carmine’s desk, her eyes fierce. "Take me with you."
Carmine frowned. "Absolutely not. It's too dangerous."
"Bellarose thinks I’m just a helpless maid who hid behind flour bags," Nell insisted, leaning over the desk until she was inches from Carmine. "He won't expect me to be there. I know the layout of that old sugar refinery—my father used to buy raw molasses from their central vault. There is a secondary drainage tunnel that leads directly behind the main office."
Carmine studied her resolute face for several long seconds. He saw the same unstoppable courage that had kept her alive through years of poverty and grief.

"You stay in the armored car with Benny until the perimeter is secured," Carmine ordered firmly. "Understood?"
Nell nodded. "Understood."
