Chapter 8 - [A LITTLE GIRL'S BRAVERY]

Answer one: Vanessa's betrayal had inadvertently provided the exact tool Luca needed to summon the full force of the Mafia Commission.

Open two: Who grabbed Rebecca in the dark? And did Peterson escape with the key?

I screamed, swinging my elbow backward as hard as I could.

The person grunted, stumbling back, but their grip remained tight on my apron strings.

"Easy! Easy, it's me!" a strained voice gasped.

I stopped. The emergency backup lights suddenly flickered on, casting a dim, red glow across the foyer.

It was Arthur.

The head of security was leaning heavily against the wall, clutching his bleeding shoulder. He looked pale, but alive.

"Arthur," I breathed, sagging in relief.

"I told you... I wouldn't let them hurt the kid," Arthur grimaced, pulling a heavy revolver from his holster and handing it to me. "Take this. Guard the front door. The Boss went after Peterson."

I took the cold metal gun. My hands were shaking, but I stood up, positioning myself between Lily and the shattered entrance.

Outside, the roar of engines grew deafening.

Dozens of armored SUVs tore through the iron gates of the estate, crushing Peterson's mercenary vehicles. Men in heavy tactical gear poured out, securing the perimeter in seconds. The Chicago Commission didn't send police; they sent an army.

Inside the house, the silence was agonizing.

Five minutes passed. Then ten.

"Where is he?" I whispered, my eyes scanning the dark hallway where Luca had chased Peterson.

Lily tugged on my skirt. She pointed down the hall.

Through the shadows, a figure emerged.

It was Luca.

He was breathing heavily, his suit torn, his knuckles bloodied. In his left hand, he held his weapon.

In his right hand, he held the silver key.

"It's over," Luca said, his voice rough.

He walked over to us and dropped to his knees in front of Lily. He didn't care about the blood on his hands or the ruined mansion around him. He gently pulled his niece into his arms and buried his face in her shoulder.

"You're safe, baby," Luca whispered. "He's gone. He's never going to hurt you again."

Lily wrapped her arms tightly around his neck. She was crying, but this time, they were tears of profound relief.

Luca looked up at me. His dark eyes were filled with an emotion I couldn't quite name. Gratitude. Respect. And something deeper.

"You saved her, Rebecca," Luca said softly. "You threw the house into darkness. You hid her. You risked your life."

"She's family," I said, the words slipping out before I could stop them. I was just a maid. I had no right to call a mafia boss's niece family.

But Luca didn't correct me. He reached out and gently placed his hand over mine.

"Yes," Luca said. "She is."

The estate was flooded with light as Arthur's men finally restored the backup generators. The reality of the night’s violence became clear. Shattered glass, broken antique furniture, and the bodies of Peterson's men being quietly removed by the Commission's cleaners.

Peterson himself had been captured alive by Luca in the gardens. He was being dragged into one of the armored SUVs, destined for a Commission tribunal from which he would never return.

The nightmare was finally ending.

Luca stood up, helping Lily to her feet. He looked at Eleanor, who had emerged trembling from the dining room where she had hidden during the firefight.

"Eleanor," Luca said gently. "You're coming with us."

The older woman wept, nodding in gratitude.

We moved to the secure wing of the house, away from the destruction. Lily, exhausted from the adrenaline, fell asleep on the sofa, her head resting in my lap.

I sat quietly, gently stroking her hair.

Luca was on the phone, coordinating the cleanup and ensuring Vanessa was handed over to the authorities with enough anonymous evidence to put her in federal prison for extortion.

When he finally hung up, he walked over to the sofa and sat down beside me.

"It's done," Luca sighed, leaning his head back against the leather. "The safety deposit box will be emptied tomorrow. The evidence of Peterson's existence will be destroyed. Sarah's secret is safe."

"What about Vanessa?" I asked softly, careful not to wake Lily.

"She'll spend the next twenty years in a concrete cell, wondering how a maid managed to completely dismantle her empire," Luca smiled faintly.

I smiled back, feeling a wave of exhaustion wash over me.

"My mother is going to kill me," I whispered. "I was supposed to wire her rent money tonight."

Luca looked at me. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a heavy, cream-colored envelope.

He placed it gently in my lap.

"What is this?" I asked.

"Your resignation," Luca said quietly.

My heart stopped.

After everything we had just survived, he was firing me?

"Mr. Moretti," I stammered, tears instantly welling in my eyes. "Please. I thought..."

"Open it, Rebecca," Luca said, his voice incredibly soft.

With trembling hands, I opened the envelope.

Inside wasn't a termination letter.

It was a deed. A legal deed to a beautiful, fully paid-off house in the Chicago suburbs, registered in my mother's name. And beneath it was a contract for a new position at the Moretti Estate.

Not as a maid.
