Chapter 4 - [THE FOOTAGE FROM THE NURSERY]

Answer one: The boarding school was a complex trap. Vanessa needed Lily to bypass the bank's biometric security so she could access Sarah's hidden safety deposit box.

Open two: What was inside the box that was worth terrorizing a grieving family for three years? And how did Vanessa know about it?

The dinner guests began to murmur, the quiet shock finally breaking into frantic, hushed conversations.

Luca ignored them all. He held the silver key tight in his fist.

"Arthur," Luca called out.

The head of security, a broad-shouldered man with salt-and-pepper hair, stepped immediately into the light. "Yes, Boss."

"Clear the room," Luca ordered. "Escort the guests to their cars. Apologize for the disruption. If any of them speak to the press about what happened here tonight, remind them who I am."

"Yes, sir."

Within four minutes, the grand dining room was empty.

Only Luca, Lily, Eleanor, Patricia, Vanessa, and I remained.

Vanessa was still sitting on the marble floor, her perfect hair disheveled, tears ruining her expensive makeup. She looked up at Luca, her eyes filled with desperate calculation.

"Luca, you have to listen to me," Vanessa begged, her voice taking on a sickly sweet tone. "I did this for us. Your sister was hiding money from the family business. Millions of dollars. I was trying to recover it for you before the wedding!"

"Stop lying," Luca said. The coldness in his voice was absolute. "My sister had no access to the family accounts. She was an art teacher."

"Then where did she get the safety deposit box?" Vanessa challenged, scrambling to her knees. "She was hiding something, Luca! She was a thief!"

"Don't call my mommy a thief!" Lily cried out, her small fists clenching at her sides.

I immediately wrapped my arms around the little girl, pulling her against my apron. I could feel her heart racing like a trapped bird.

Luca looked at his niece, his face softening with an unbearable sorrow. Then he looked back at Vanessa, his expression hardening into stone.

"If she was hiding something," Luca said quietly, "it was to keep it away from you."

He turned to his head of security.

"Arthur, three years ago, when Sarah died, I had you archive all the security footage from her house. Did you keep it?"

Arthur nodded. "Yes, sir. It's in the secure server downstairs."

Vanessa went rigid. "Luca, no. You can't."

"Bring it up," Luca commanded. "Put it on the screen in the study."

"Luca, please!" Vanessa shrieked, crawling toward his legs. "It was a misunderstanding! I didn't mean to scare her!"

Luca stepped back, letting her grasp at empty air.

"Take her to the study," he told his men.

We moved down the long, carpeted hallway into Luca’s private office. The walls were lined with heavy oak bookshelves. A massive flat-screen monitor hung above the fireplace.

Arthur was already typing at the keyboard.

"Pull up the day before the crash," Luca said. "Interior cameras. Master bedroom and nursery."

Arthur clicked the mouse. The screen flickered to life.

The video was silent, black and white, but agonizingly clear.

It showed Sarah—Lily's mother—pacing frantically in the nursery. She looked exhausted, her hair messy, clutching a small blue folder to her chest. Eight-year-old Lily was sitting on the floor, playing with blocks.

Then, the nursery door swung open.

Vanessa walked in.

She looked exactly the same as she did now. Arrogant. Powerful. She was pointing a finger at Sarah, cornering her against the crib.

Lily squeezed her eyes shut and buried her face in my shoulder. She didn't want to watch the nightmare happen again.

I rubbed her back gently. "It's okay, honey. You're safe."

On the screen, Sarah tried to push past Vanessa, but Vanessa grabbed her arm. She ripped the heavy platinum bracelet off Sarah’s wrist. Sarah fell to the floor, sobbing, holding her arm.

But Vanessa didn't stop there.

She leaned down, getting inches from Sarah's face. Whatever she was saying was making Sarah shake with absolute terror.

Then, Vanessa snatched the blue folder from Sarah's hands.

"Pause it," Luca said, his voice a ragged whisper.

The image froze on Vanessa's face.

"Zoom in on the folder," Luca ordered.

Arthur enhanced the image.

The folder wasn't just a random file. It had a distinct, embossed logo on the front.

A medical caduceus.

"That's a hospital record," Eleanor gasped from behind us.

Luca stared at the screen. "Why would you blackmail my sister over a medical file?"

Vanessa was backed into the corner of the study, trembling violently. "I didn't! I was just... I was looking for her financial statements!"

"Arthur, play it," Luca demanded.

The video resumed. Vanessa opened the blue folder, pulled out a stack of papers, and held them up in front of Sarah. She pointed to a specific line of text.

Sarah fell apart. She buried her face in her hands, completely broken.

Vanessa smiled on the footage. A cold, victorious smile. She dropped the folder on the floor, turned around, and walked out of the room.

The video ended.

The study was dead silent.

Luca turned to Vanessa. The rage radiating from him was palpable, filling the room like smoke.

"What was in that file?" Luca asked.

Vanessa shook her head, tears ruining her face. "Nothing! It was nothing!"

"If you don't tell me," Luca said softly, "I will lock you in the basement of this estate, and the police will never find your body."

Vanessa sobbed, sliding down the wall until she hit the floor.

"It was a paternity test," Vanessa choked out.

The room spun.

Eleanor gasped, covering her mouth with her hands.

Luca stared at her. "What?"

"Sarah's husband didn't die in a boating accident before Lily was born," Vanessa cried, her voice echoing in the quiet study. "That was a lie your family invented to cover up a scandal."

Vanessa looked up, her eyes wide with a sick, desperate triumph.

"Lily's father is alive, Luca. And the file proved it."
