Chapter 2 - [THE BRACELET SHE THOUGHT WAS BURIED]

The silence in the dining room was so absolute I could hear the faint hum of the chandeliers above us.
Twenty-six guests sat frozen in their chairs.
Nobody touched their wine. Nobody reached for their napkins.
Luca Moretti didn't blink.
He stood at the head of the table, his dark eyes fixed on the silver-haired woman who had just shattered his entire world.
Eleanor Whitmore.
The woman he had spent the last eleven years believing was dead.
"What do you mean, you've been trying to see her for three years?" Luca asked.
His voice was terrifyingly quiet. It carried no anger yet, only a cold, methodical demand for the truth.
Eleanor’s hands trembled where they rested on the back of her chair.
"My daughter, Sarah, didn't cut me out of her life because we had a falling out," Eleanor said, her voice cracking. "She stopped speaking to me because she was terrified. Someone was blackmailing her, Mr. Moretti. Someone threatened that if she didn't isolate herself, they would take Lily away."
Vanessa immediately pushed her chair back. The heavy wood scraped loudly against the marble floor.
"Luca, this woman is clearly unstable," Vanessa said, her voice rising in panic. "Patricia brought a lunatic into our home. We need to call security."
Luca didn't even look at his fiancée.
He simply raised his hand. One minimal gesture.
Two men in dark suits stepped out from the shadows of the hallway and blocked the dining room doors.
"Nobody is leaving," Luca said.
He slowly walked around the edge of the long table, his footsteps echoing in the quiet room, until he stopped directly in front of Eleanor.
"My sister was a Moretti," Luca said softly. "Nobody threatened her without answering to me. If someone blackmailed her, why didn't she tell me?"
Eleanor looked down at Lily.
The little girl was still clutching my apron, her wide eyes darting between her uncle and the strange woman crying across the room.
"Because the person blackmailing her convinced her that you were the one who wanted Lily gone," Eleanor whispered.
Luca went completely still.
"What?"
"They told Sarah that a child with a disability was a liability to your family's reputation," Eleanor continued, tears spilling down her wrinkled cheeks. "They told her you were planning to quietly institutionalize Lily, and that the only way to protect her was to pay a massive sum of money to a private fixer."
My stomach turned to ice.
I looked at Luca. The powerful, feared man looked as if he had just been physically struck.
He had spent his life protecting his sister. He had learned sign language. He had taken Lily in the moment Sarah died. The idea that his own sister had spent her final months terrified of him was a wound too deep to measure.
"That's a lie," Luca breathed, his voice breaking. "Sarah knew I would burn this city to the ground before I let anyone hurt her child."
"I know," Eleanor said gently. "But Sarah was desperate. She drained her trust fund trying to pay the blackmailer. When she ran out of money, she started giving them family heirlooms."
Vanessa swallowed loudly.
"This is ridiculous," Vanessa snapped. Her red silk gown rustled as she crossed her arms. "Luca, are you really going to let a stranger ruin our engagement dinner with these absurd fairy tales?"
Eleanor slowly turned her head toward Vanessa.
All the fear suddenly vanished from the older woman's eyes. It was replaced by a decades-old, simmering rage.
"It's not a fairy tale, Vanessa," Eleanor said. "And you know exactly what heirlooms she gave away."
"I have no idea what you're talking about," Vanessa sneered.
Eleanor reached into her conservative navy purse.
She pulled out a faded, slightly crumpled photograph and placed it face-up on the dining table.
Luca picked it up.
I was standing close enough to see it. It was a picture of Sarah, Lily's mother, holding Lily as a newborn. Around Sarah's wrist was a very distinct, heavy platinum bracelet with a sapphire clasp.
"Sarah wore that bracelet every day of her life," Eleanor said quietly. "It belonged to her grandmother in Italy. It was the last thing she used to pay the blackmailer, three days before her car went off the bridge."
Answer one: Sarah's isolation wasn't a choice; it was forced by a blackmailer who used Luca's reputation against her.
Open two: Who orchestrated the blackmail? And what does it have to do with Vanessa?
Luca stared at the photograph.
His eyes traced the intricate platinum links. He knew that piece of jewelry. Every member of the Moretti family knew it.
"That bracelet went missing from the wreckage," Luca said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "The police told me it was lost in the river."
Eleanor shook her head.
"It wasn't lost in the river, Mr. Moretti. It was taken as a final payment."
"By whom?" Luca demanded.
Eleanor didn't answer him. Instead, she lifted her hand and pointed directly at Vanessa Bellini.
"Why don't you ask your fiancée to take off her evening gloves?" Eleanor said.
The entire room turned to look at Vanessa.
Vanessa had been wearing elegant, elbow-length white silk gloves all evening. I had assumed it was merely a fashion choice to complement her red gown.
Vanessa’s face drained of all color. She took a step backward, bumping into her chair.
"Don't be absurd," Vanessa stammered, her voice shrill. "I bought my jewelry in Paris."
Luca didn't ask twice.
He closed the distance between them in three long strides. He didn't yell. He didn't raise a hand in anger. He simply took Vanessa's left wrist in his grip.
"Take it off," Luca commanded.
"Luca, you're hurting me!" Vanessa cried, struggling to pull away.
But Luca's grip was like iron. With his free hand, he grabbed the top hem of the white silk glove and pulled it down.
The silk slid away.
And the chandelier light caught the deep blue reflection of the sapphire clasp.

Resting against Vanessa’s pale skin was his dead sister's platinum bracelet.
