Chapter 5 - [THE MAN IN THE HALLWAY]

Answer one: Sarah was being blackmailed with proof that Lily's father was not the dead war hero the Moretti family had claimed, but a man who was still very much alive.

Open two: Who is Lily's real father? And why was Vanessa using him to destroy Sarah?

"You're lying," Luca said. But his voice lacked the absolute certainty it had carried all evening.

He looked at Eleanor. The older woman was gripping the back of a leather armchair, her face ashen.

"Eleanor," Luca demanded. "Is she telling the truth?"

Eleanor couldn't meet his eyes. "Mr. Moretti... your father arranged Sarah's marriage. He told us the boy died at sea shortly after they eloped. He brought Sarah home, pregnant and broken. We never questioned it."

"It was a cover-up!" Vanessa laughed hysterically from the floor. "Your father paid a fortune to bury the truth because the man Sarah actually loved was a monster. A man who would have ruined the Moretti name."

Luca stepped toward Vanessa, his jaw locked. "Who is it? Give me a name."

"I don't know his name!" Vanessa shrieked. "The file only had an alias. 'The Architect'. That's what they called him. I found out about the file through a private investigator when I was trying to find leverage on your family. I just wanted a piece of the Moretti fortune, Luca! I needed the money to pay off my own father's debts!"

I held Lily tighter. The little girl couldn't hear the specifics of the conversation, but she could read the anger and fear in the room. She was trembling against my apron.

"She was terrified of him," Vanessa continued, tears streaming down her face. "Sarah knew that if 'The Architect' found out he had a daughter, he would come for Lily. And she knew that if you found out the truth, your father's enemies would use the scandal to destroy you."

Luca closed his eyes. The weight of his sister's silent suffering crashed down on him. She had carried the terror alone, protecting him, protecting her daughter, until the very end.

"So you used her fear to extort her," Luca said, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "You took her jewelry. You drained her accounts. And when she had nothing left, you demanded access to the safety deposit box."

"The box has the real identity!" Vanessa sobbed. "I needed it to keep blackmailing him! I was going to secure our future, Luca!"

"Arthur," Luca said, not taking his eyes off his fiancée. "Take her to the holding cells in the basement. Call the Commission. We are going to make an example of her."

Arthur grabbed Vanessa by the arms, dragging her screaming from the study.

"Luca, you need me!" Vanessa shrieked as she was pulled down the hallway. "You don't know what's coming!"

The heavy oak doors slammed shut, cutting off her voice.

The study was quiet again.

Luca rubbed his face with both hands, a gesture of profound exhaustion. He looked at Lily.

"Uncle Luca?" Lily signed slowly. Is the bad lady gone?

Luca knelt down. He didn't sign back. He just pulled her into a fierce, protective hug.

"She's gone, baby," Luca whispered into her hair. "She's never coming back."

He stood up and looked at me. "Rebecca. Take Lily upstairs to her room. Lock the door. Do not let anyone inside except me or Arthur."

"Yes, sir," I said, taking Lily's hand.

We walked out of the study and headed toward the grand staircase. The mansion felt entirely different now. It was no longer a place of celebration; it felt like a fortress preparing for a siege.

We reached the top of the stairs and turned down the long, carpeted hallway toward Lily's bedroom.

The hallway was dimly lit by antique sconces. It was usually quiet, but tonight, the silence felt heavy.

As we approached Lily's door, I noticed something wrong.

The door was slightly ajar.

I stopped. I knew I had closed it firmly when we came down for dinner.

I put my hand on Lily's shoulder, holding her back. "Stay here a second, honey."

I pushed the door open gently.

The room had been completely ransacked.

Drawers were pulled out and emptied onto the floor. The mattress was slashed open. Books were torn from their shelves.

Someone had been searching for something.

My heart hammered in my throat. I backed out of the room, keeping Lily behind me.

"We need to go back downstairs," I whispered, turning around.

But our path was blocked.

Standing at the end of the hallway, illuminated only by the dim sconce light, was a man.

He was tall, wearing a tailored gray suit. He wasn't one of Luca's security guards. He didn't belong in this house.

In his right hand, he held a suppressed pistol.

"Hello, Rebecca," the man said smoothly.

I froze. I knew that voice.

It was Mr. Peterson. The older, gray-haired guest from the dinner table. The man who had politely apologized for turning his back when Lily was speaking.

But as he stepped fully into the light, I realized he wasn't a guest at all.

He looked down at Lily, a cold, empty smile spreading across his face.

"I believe my daughter has a silver key that belongs to me," Mr. Peterson said.
