Chapter 10 - THE ENFORCER IN THE ALLEY

Time seemed to fracture into slow motion.

Nora didn't scream.

She didn't freeze.

Drawing upon survival instincts she didn't know she possessed, she grabbed a heavy, steel-encased encrypted laptop from the console and smashed it with all her strength directly across the gunman’s wrist.

The shotgun fired harmlessly into the van's aluminum ceiling, showering them with sparks and drywall dust.

The masked enforcer roared in pain, dropping the weapon.

Before he could recover, Nora lunged forward, kicking her heel upward into his chest and shoving him backward out of the van into the freezing rain of the alley.

She slammed the heavy armored door shut, sliding the thick steel deadbolt into place with a resounding clack.

She spun back to the monitors.

On camera two, the third assassin in the gallery was down, disarmed and pinned to the marble floor by Victor’s boot.

The gunfire had ceased.

Sirens wailed in the distance, rapidly approaching the gallery.

Victor’s voice crackled through the headset, sharp and breathless: “Nora! Status report! Are you hit?”

"I'm fine!" Nora panted, pressing her hand against her chest as her adrenaline finally began to recede. "The third shooter in the gallery is down. The perimeter is secure."

“Stay inside the van,” Victor commanded, his voice dark with simmering fury. “Leo is sweeping your alley right now. I'm coming to you.”
