Chapter 12 - THE ANNIVERSARY GALA

One year later.
The grand ballroom of the Moretti estate was bathed in the soft, romantic glow of a thousand beeswax candles and crystal chandeliers.
There were no corrupt syndicate bosses, no federal wiretaps, and no hired assassins hiding in the shadows.
Just trusted friends, high-ranking corporate executives, and civic leaders celebrating the annual Moretti Foundation gala—an organization now dedicated entirely to urban renewal and youth education across Chicago.
Nora stood at the center of the ballroom, wearing a breathtaking floor-length emerald-green silk gown that caught the candlelight with every movement.
She was no longer just the brilliant COO who managed the syndicate’s logistics; she was the respected co-matriarch of the Moretti family.
As the string quartet played a gentle waltz, Victor walked up behind her, sliding his arms around her waist and pulling her flush against his chest.
"You're quiet tonight, Mrs. Moretti," he murmured against her ear.
Nora leaned back into his embrace, resting her head against his shoulder. "I was just thinking about the night at Le Jardin Noir. The night you told Leo to lock the door."
Victor chuckled softly, a deep, resonant sound. "A night I almost lost my best secretary."
"Secretary?" Nora arched an eyebrow, turning in his arms to face him with a playful spark in her eyes. "I believe I was a COO in training."
"Indeed you were," Victor agreed, capturing her lips in a slow, tender kiss that made the surrounding guests smile in quiet admiration.
The music swelled through the ancient stone arches of the estate.
