Chapter 9 - THE GALA AT THE METROPOLITAN GALLERY

The night of the charity gala arrived with a biting November wind that whipped rain against the glass facade of the Metropolitan Art Gallery downtown.

Inside, the vaulted ceilings and marble floors were bathed in warm amber light, filled with Chicago’s elite—politicians, judges, corporate executives, and underworld figures mingling under the guise of high society.

Parked three blocks away in a narrow, shadowed alley, the custom-built Moretti tactical command van hummed with quiet electrical energy.

Nora sat inside the dimly lit interior, surrounded by six glowing monitors displaying live security feeds, thermal scans, and encrypted police scanner frequencies.

"All sectors clear," Nora spoke into her headset, her fingers flying across the dual keyboards. "Victor, you're clear to enter the main sculpture hall."

Through the external audio feed, she heard Victor’s calm, steady voice reply: “Acknowledged, Nora. Keep your eyes on the south balcony.”

Nora switched her focus to camera four—the south balcony overlooking the grand staircase.

Movement.

Three figures in dark wool coats detached themselves from the shadows near the service elevator.

Silenced automatic rifles glinted briefly under the emergency exit lights.

"Victor! Ambush!" Nora shouted into her mic, her heart leaping into her throat. "South balcony, three shooters descending the service stairs right now!"

Before she could finish the warning, the audio feed erupted with the sharp, distinctive pop-pop-pop of suppressed gunfire echoing through the marble hall.

Panicked screams filled the gallery as wealthy patrons scrambled for cover behind marble pillars and art installations.

On monitor two, Nora watched in horror as Victor didn't dive for cover.

Instead, he drew his custom SIG Sauer pistol with blinding speed, pivoted on his heel, and fired twice through the haze of smoke.

Two of the attackers dropped instantly to the polished marble floor.

The third assailant lunged forward, leveling his rifle directly at Victor’s chest.

"Victor! Behind you!" Nora screamed into the comms, gripping the edge of the control console so hard her knuckles turned white.

Victor spun around, but before he could squeeze the trigger, a loud crash echoed from the alley outside the command van.

Bang!

The side door of the tactical van was yanked open with brutal force.

A masked enforcer holding a heavy shotgun loomed in the doorway, leveling the barrel directly at Nora’s head.
