Chapter 15 - A Legacy Reborn (The End)

One year later.
The grand ballroom of the Moretti estate was bathed in warm golden light, decorated with thousands of white roses, orchids, and delicate fairy lights.
Over two hundred guests filled the hall: civic leaders, doctors, foundation scholars, and loyal employees who were now treated as family.
At the center of the hall, near the grand portrait of Isabella Moretti, hung a new brass plaque commemorating the opening of the Isabella & Emma Moretti Pediatric Wing at Chicago Children’s Hospital.
I stood beside the dessert table, wearing an elegant ivory silk gown that flowed like water around my feet.
My mother, healthy and vibrant after a successful surgery, was laughing across the room with Daniel Russo, who looked happier and younger than he ever had.
“Enjoying your party, Mrs. Moretti?”
Warm, strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind.
Luca rested his chin gently against my shoulder, breathing in the scent of my hair. He was wearing an exquisite black tuxedo, looking more handsome and regal than ever.
“It’s not just my party, Luca,” I said, turning in his arms to wrap my hands around his neck. “It’s our celebration. Look at this room. There are no guns. No threats. No fear.”
Luca looked out across the smiling guests, then back into my eyes.
“Because of you, Emma. You turned a criminal syndicate into a legacy of hope.”
Just then, Matteo approached us, holding a silver tray with a sealed cream envelope.
“Pardon the interruption, Don Luca, Mrs. Moretti.”
Luca smiled warmly at his trusted friend. “What is it, Matteo?”
“The annual audit report from the Swiss banking committee just arrived,” Matteo said with a knowing grin. “Signed and verified.”
I took the envelope, opened it, and glanced at the final balance sheet.
Everything was balanced to the penny. The foundation’s assets had doubled, funding over five thousand new scholarships across the state.
And at the bottom of the invoice, printed in elegant gold ink, was the department routing code:
CODE 01 – EXPEDITION OF HOPE.
I looked up at Luca, my eyes shining with happiness.
“The numbers match perfectly, Mr. Moretti.”
Luca laughed, pulling me close and spinning me lightly on the polished marble floor as the orchestra began to play a soft, romantic waltz.
“From now on, my love,” Luca whispered softly against my lips, “you’re the only one who ever signs the checks.”
I leaned in, kissing my husband deeply amidst the applause and laughter of the people we loved.
The maid who questioned a forty-eight-thousand-dollar bill was no longer an outsider cleaning the floors.
I was Emma Moretti.

And our legacy was only just beginning.
