Chapter 13 - Unmasking the Matriarch

With Silvio and Vittorio in federal custody and the evidence submitted, only one loose end remained.

Vanessa Bellini.

Two days later, the Federal Courthouse in downtown Chicago was besieged by hundreds of reporters, television cameras, and federal marshals.

The trial for the Bellini conspiracy was expedited due to national security concerns.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing an elegant tailored navy suit that Luca had personally commissioned for me.

Luca sat beside me, dressed in an immaculate charcoal three-piece suit, holding my hand openly in front of the entire press corps.

Vanessa was led into the courtroom in bright orange prison scrubs, her hands and ankles shackled.

Her hair was unkempt, her face pale and hollow. All the glamour, arrogance, and cruelty of the woman who had called me “a stupid little maid” had vanished.

When she saw me sitting beside Luca, her eyes burned with hysterical hatred.

“You!” she shrieked, struggling against the two federal marshals holding her. “You ruined everything! You were supposed to clean my floors! You’re nothing!”

The judge slammed his gavel down hard.

“Order! Silence in the court!”

Luca stood up, his commanding presence instantly hushing the entire gallery.

He looked at Vanessa with neither anger nor pity. Only cold, absolute finality.

“You thought money and a family name made you untouchable, Vanessa,” Luca said, his voice ringing clearly through the courtroom. “You tried to steal from children. You tried to desecrate my mother’s name. And you were brought down by the very person you looked down upon.”

The federal prosecutor stepped forward, presenting the grand jury’s indictment.

“Vanessa Bellini is charged with wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, money laundering, and treason under the RICO Act. The state recommends life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.”

Vanessa collapsed onto the defense table, sobbing uncontrollably as the judge affirmed the charges and ordered her remanded to maximum security custody.

As she was dragged past our row, she looked at me one last time, weeping in utter despair.

I met her gaze calmly, without gloating, without cruelty.

“Have a nice life, Vanessa,” I said softly.

The courtroom doors closed behind her, locking away the Bellini dynasty forever.
