Chapter 11 - Bloodlines and Broken Vows

The sanctuary in Lake Forest was an old Victorian manor surrounded by towering weeping willows and iron gates overgrown with ivy.

It had stood silent and empty for two decades, untouched by time, protected by the trust’s automated security funds.

We arrived as the first faint light of dawn began to paint the horizon in shades of indigo and pale gold.

Luca stepped onto the porch, inserting the antique brass key into the front door.

The heavy oak door swung open without a sound.

The interior was pristine, preserved under white canvas dust sheets. The air smelled of dried lavender and old cedar—the exact scent Luca’s mother had loved.

“Where would she hide it?” Daniel asked, looking around the grand foyer.

I walked toward the grand staircase.

On the landing hung an antique grandfather clock carved with intricate motifs of the ouroboros and wild vines.

“Emma?” Luca called, following me up the stairs.

“Look at the clock face, Luca,” I pointed.

The clock had no numbers. Instead, it was engraved with Roman numerals that matched the date of Isabella Moretti’s birth.

And in the center of the pendulum was a small circular depression exactly the size of Luca’s sapphire medallion.

Luca approached, his chest rising and falling heavily.

He pulled the velvet pouch from his pocket, removed the silver ouroboros medallion, and gently pressed it into the center of the pendulum.

A mechanical chime echoed through the silent house.

A hidden compartment in the base of the clock popped open with a clean hiss of hydraulic pressure.

Inside lay a polished rosewood box lined with velvet.

Luca lifted the lid.

Inside rested a handwritten letter addressed to My Beloved Luca, alongside a heavy parchment document with gold leaf borders: The Founding Charter of the Chicago Coalition.

Luca picked up the letter. His fingers trembled slightly as he read his mother’s final words.

“My dearest Luca,

If you are reading this, it means you have grown into a man of honor, and the wolves have finally come to your door. Never let the Bellinis steal what your father built for peace. The charter inside gives you absolute authority to dissolve their empire. Lead with strength, but always rule with justice.

Your loving mother, Isabella.”

A single tear tracked down Luca’s cheek. He wiped it away quickly, but a profound peace seemed to settle over his rugged features.

“She knew,” Luca whispered. “She protected us all along.”

Suddenly, the front doors of the mansion were kicked open with violent force.

Standing in the doorway, armed with submachine guns and tactical gear, was an elite squad of Bellini hitmen led by none other than Don Vittorio’s younger brother, Silvio Bellini.

“Hand over the charter, Luca!” Silvio bellowed from the foyer. “Or none of you leave this house alive!”
