Chapter 14 - Cleaning House

The following month was a whirlwind of transformation for the Moretti family and the city of Chicago.
With the Bellini syndicate dismantled, Luca restructured the entire family business into fully legitimate commercial enterprises: shipping logistics, green energy ports, and legitimate real estate development.
The Isabella Moretti Memorial Trust was completely restored.
Every single cent of the forty-eight million dollars that the Bellinis had attempted to launder was legally reclaimed and deposited into an irrevocable endowment for pediatric medical research and inner-city scholarships.
Daniel Russo was officially promoted to Chief Executive of Moretti Logistics, his loyalty rewarded with ten percent equity in the new maritime company.
And as for me?
I moved out of my cramped two-room apartment.
My mother was transferred to the top private medical clinic in Chicago, where world-class specialists treated her kidney condition. Luca personally ensured that every medical expense was covered for the rest of her life.
On a warm autumn afternoon, Luca invited me to the private rooftop garden of Moretti Tower.
The sun was setting over Lake Michigan, painting the sky in breathtaking hues of crimson, rose, and gold.
Luca stood near the marble railing, a glass of vintage Italian red wine in his hand, looking out over the city he had freed from corruption.
I walked up beside him, the cool breeze blowing my hair across my shoulders.
“Penny for your thoughts, Don Moretti?” I asked softly.
Luca turned toward me. A tender, genuine smile touched his lips—a smile that made my heart race just as fast as it had on the night we met.
“I was thinking about the first night you spoke up at that dining table,” he said, setting his glass aside and stepping closer to me.
“You thought I was crazy,” I teased gently.
“I thought you were a miracle,” Luca whispered, taking both of my hands into his.
His gray eyes were soft, filled with an emotion so deep and profound that it took my breath away.
“Emma, for twenty years, I lived in darkness. I believed my life was only meant for vengeance, duty, and violence. But when you stood up to Vanessa—when you defended the truth without caring about the consequences—you showed me what true courage looks like.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box.
My breath caught in my throat. My eyes welled with tears.
“Luca...” I whispered.
Luca dropped down onto one knee, opening the box to reveal a breathtaking, custom platinum ring featuring an exquisite emerald-cut diamond surrounded by two deep blue sapphires—representing the ouroboros of loyalty and endless love.
“Emma Reed, you saved my family. You healed my soul. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife, my partner, and the true lady of the Moretti family?”
Tears spilled over my cheeks as I laughed through my joy.
May you like
“Yes, Luca. A thousand times, yes.”
Luca rose, sliding the ring onto my finger before sweeping me into his arms and pressing his lips to mine in a passionate, breathtaking kiss that sealed our promise under the Chicago sunset.
