Chapter 5 - THE MIDNIGHT RAID

The rain came down in sheets against the bulletproof windows of the Blackwell estate.
Kate stood at the window of the fourth-floor parlor, watching the red and blue flashing lights pull up the long gravel driveway.
Federal vehicles. Black SUVs with tinted windows and government plates.
Senator Caldwell had moved faster than expected.
The door behind her opened, but it wasn't Damon.
It was Marcus, his suit jacket off, a heavy tactical vest strapped over his black shirt, a suppressed automatic weapon resting against his thigh.
"Miss Bennett," Marcus said briskly.
"You need to come with me. Now."
"What's happening?" she asked, her heart pounding against her ribs.
"The senator brought friends," Marcus said, a grim smile touching his lips.
"Federal marshals with a warrant to search the estate. But they won't find anything in the main house."
"Where is Mr. Blackwell?"
"Downstairs. Welcoming our guests."
Kate followed Marcus down the service stairs, keeping her casted arm pressed against her stomach.
The air in the grand foyer was thick with tension.
Four men in federal tactical gear stood in the center of the marble floor, their weapons lowered but ready.
At the front stood Senator Harrison Caldwell, his face purple with rage, his expensive trench coat soaked from the rain.
"Where is my son, Blackwell?!" the senator bellowed, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.
Damon stood at the top of the grand staircase.
He was wearing a fresh black shirt, his hands tucked casually into his trouser pockets.
He looked down at the powerful politician the way a zookeeper looks at an angry duck.
"Good evening, Senator," Damon said smoothly.
"You're tracking mud on my Italian marble."
"I have a federal search warrant signed by a judge!" Senator Caldwell screamed, waving a piece of paper in the air.
"My son Preston was last tracked to your property! If he isn't breathing when I find him, I will see to it that every federal agency in this country tears this house down brick by brick!"
Damon walked slowly down the stairs.
Each step was deliberate, echoing through the silent foyer.
The marshals shifted nervously, raising their rifles slightly, but none of them dared point them directly at Damon.
"Your son is breathing, Harrison," Damon said softly, stopping three steps from the bottom.
"In fact, he's resting very comfortably in the basement."
"Bring him up! Right now!"
"I'm afraid I can't do that," Damon replied, tilting his head.
"Why the hell not?!"
Damon smiled. It was a cold, humorless expression.
"Because at approximately 3:15 a.m., fifteen men who were on your payroll—the ones who helped cover up his little extracurricular activities across the city—simply ceased to exist."
The senator staggered back a step.
"What... what are you talking about?"
Damon raised his hand and snapped his fingers twice.
Marcus stepped forward from the shadows, holding a heavy leather briefcase.
He popped the latches and dumped a massive pile of manila folders and encrypted hard drives onto the marble floor at the senator's feet.
"Bank records from the Cayman Islands," Damon said quietly.
"Extortion logs. Witness intimidation transcripts. All tied directly to your reelection campaign, Harrison."
Senator Caldwell stared down at the documents, his face turning from purple to chalk-white.
"You... you can't prove—"
"I don't need to prove anything in a courtroom," Damon interrupted, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
"Because by sunrise, those fifteen men won't be around to testify against you. And your son will sign a full confession to assault, battery, and attempted extortion before he eats breakfast."
The federal marshals looked at the senator, then at each other.
The unspoken truth hung heavy in the air.
Damon Blackwell didn't play by the laws of politicians.
He owned them.
Senator Caldwell dropped to his knees in the wet marble, his hands trembling as he touched the files.
"What do you want, Damon?" the senator whispered, his voice broken.
Damon looked past the senator, his dark eyes finding Kate standing quietly in the shadows of the hallway.
"I want justice," Damon said softly.
May you like
"And my house kept clean."
