Chapter 13 - THE FINAL GAMBIT

The large screen in the fourth-floor security briefing room was tuned to a live national news broadcast.

Senator Harrison Caldwell stood behind a podium at the state capitol, looking desperate, exhausted, but dangerously determined.

Beside him stood a woman Kate hadn't seen in years.

Her older sister, Chloe, who had vanished to Tucson two years ago without a single phone call.

"Citizens of Boston," Senator Caldwell announced into a forest of microphones, his voice trembling with manufactured righteousness.

"For too long, a criminal syndicate operating under the guise of the Blackwell Foundation has terrorized our city, blackmailing public officials and silencing dissent."

The camera zoomed in on Chloe, who looked nervous, clutching a prepared statement in her hands.

"My name is Chloe Bennett," she said into the microphone, her voice shaking slightly.

"My sister, Kate Bennett, was trapped and manipulated by Damon Blackwell. She was forced into servitude, threatened, and used as a pawn in his criminal enterprise. I am begging federal authorities to intervene and save my sister before it's too late."

Kate stared at the screen in absolute disbelief.

"Chloe..." she whispered.

"She hasn't spoken to me in two years," Kate said, turning to Damon.

"She didn't care about our mother's hospital bills. She didn't call when mom was in intensive care. Why is she standing beside Caldwell?"

Damon’s face was carved from stone.

"Because Caldwell is desperate," Damon said quietly.

"When you cut off his syndicate and froze his illegal accounts, he went looking for the only leverage he had left."

"He bought her," Kate said, a cold realization settling over her chest.

"He paid off her debts in Tucson just to use her as a puppet on national television."

Damon reached out, placing a firm hand on Kate's shoulder.

"Do you want me to make her vanish, Kate?"

The question was terrifyingly casual.

"No," Kate said, her eyes narrowing with a sudden, fierce resolve.

"Don't touch her."

"Then what do you want to do?"

Kate stood up from her chair, smoothing down her blazer.

"Caldwell wants a public war? I'll give him one."

She looked at Marcus.
