Chapter 7 - THE SIGNATURE MARCO COULDN'T FORCE

Z

Marco Bellini had spent decades building rooms where he controlled every exit.

Warehouse Twelve was no exception.

Six armed men stood along the upper walkways.

Two near the loading bay.

Three by the east wall.

Dante counted them without moving his head.

Elena could tell.

She had begun recognizing the quiet mathematics behind his eyes.

Marco descended the metal staircase.

Celeste remained beside the chair.

Dante looked at his sister.

“You staged your kidnapping.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Marco wouldn't meet otherwise.”

“You could have called.”

“You stopped taking my calls.”

“You sold access to my house.”

“I gave Helena a route in.”

“You gave Adrian a route in.”

Celeste's expression cracked.

“No.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Somebody gave him your access sequence.”

Celeste looked genuinely shocked.

“I didn't.”

Dante said nothing.

Celeste looked at him.

“Dante.”

“Later.”

That one word hurt her more than yelling would have.

Marco reached the concrete floor.

He looked at Elena's bruise.

His smile disappeared.

“Adrian did that?”

Elena stared.

“Do not pretend to care.”

“I told him not to hurt you.”

“You told him to abduct me.”

“I told him to bring you home.”

“I don't have a home with you.”

Marco sighed.

“Gabriel filled your head with sentiment.”

“Gabriel filled my lunchbox with peanut butter sandwiches.”

Marco's jaw tightened.

“He wasn't your blood.”

“No. He was just there.”

Silence.

Dante looked at Elena.

Something like pride touched his face.

Marco noticed.

His attention shifted.

“This is unfortunate, Dante.”

“Your existence generally is.”

“You always had Paolo's charm.”

“And you always wanted Paolo's property.”

Marco smiled.

“Now we arrive at business.”

He gestured.

An attorney stepped from behind stacked shipping crates carrying a leather portfolio.

Elena recognized the documents.

The transfer forms Adrian had brought.

Marco laid them on a table.

“Sign your Caruso interest to Adrian.”

“No.”

“And I withdraw the incompetency petition.”

“No.”

“I also recognize Sofia's independence.”

Elena's expression hardened.

“She isn't yours to release.”

Marco's smile thinned.

“Everyone belongs to someone.”

“No.”

Dante spoke quietly.

“You should listen to her. She's saying no a lot today.”

Marco ignored him.

“Elena, you misunderstand your position.”

“I've understood it for the first time in my life.”

Marco's eyes cooled.

“You have no idea what I've protected you from.”

“You.”

Celeste looked down, hiding a smile.

Marco saw it.

“Careful, Celeste.”

Dante took one step forward.

“You don't address my sister.”

Marco laughed.

“The sister who betrayed you?”

“The distinction is familial.”

Celeste's eyes filled unexpectedly.

Marco's smile faded.

There it was.

The thing he could never understand.

People could betray Dante and still belong to him.

Marco viewed loyalty as a contract.

Dante viewed family as a wound you protected even while it bled.

Elena understood the difference.

Marco tapped the documents.

“Sign.”

“No.”

The lawyer opened the portfolio.

Inside was another document.

“Then perhaps this helps.”

Elena looked.

A death certificate.

Adrian Voss.

Her stomach dropped.

“No.”

Marco smiled.

“Not yet.”

She looked up.

“Where is he?”

“Not where Dante left him.”

Dante's eyes went to Luca's position outside.

The microphone carried everything.

No response.

Marco continued.

“I had him moved.”

Dante smiled slowly.

“You think you did.”

Marco's expression flickered.

For the first time, uncertainty.

Dante checked his watch.

“11:41.”

“What?”

“You're eight minutes behind.”

Marco's face tightened.

Dante continued.

“At 11:33, Luca relocated Adrian, Helena, and Sofia.”

Marco looked toward the catwalk.

One guard touched his earpiece.

Panic.

Dante smiled.

“Your people are receiving confirmation now.”

Marco's mask cracked.

“Where are they?”

“Somewhere you don't control.”

Marco drew a gun.

Everything happened at once.

Dante moved in front of Elena.

Celeste screamed.

The upper guards raised weapons.

And red laser sights appeared on their chests from surrounding windows.

Luca's voice boomed through hidden speakers.

“Drop them.”

Nobody moved.

Dante looked at Marco.

“You thought I walked into a warehouse with one woman and good intentions?”

Marco's gun remained raised.

“You can't shoot me.”

“No?”

“You need me.”

“No.”

“Elena needs proof of parentage.”

Dante glanced at Elena.

She reached into her pocket.

Pulled out a plastic evidence bag.

Inside was a drinking straw.

Marco stared.

Elena smiled.

“You had coffee while waiting.”

Celeste looked delighted.

Marco went pale.

“You took my DNA.”

“Elena did,” Dante said.

“Before she walked over here.”

Elena held up the bag.

“The cup too.”

Marco's gun lowered one inch.

“That proves nothing legally.”

“It proves enough to get a court order.”

Marco's face twisted.

“You stupid girl.”

Dante's eyes changed.

Marco realized the mistake immediately.

But Elena stepped around Dante.

“No.”

She stood directly in front of Marco.

“I spent years frightened of a man I had never met.”

Her voice did not shake.

“I changed cities because of you. Jobs because of you. Names because of you.”

She pointed at the transfer papers.

“You built fake medical records because you assumed if I ever got close enough to defend myself, you'd need the world to believe I was crazy.”

Marco stared.

Elena continued.

“You trained my brother to be afraid of you. You imprisoned my mother. You lied to Sofia. And you still think the important thing in this room is whether I sign a piece of paper.”

She picked up the documents.

Then tore them in half.

The sound was small.

Yet it changed everything.

Marco's face became murderous.

“You have no idea what you've done.”

“Yes, I do.”

She tore them again.

“I said no.”

Marco raised the gun again.

Dante moved.

A shot exploded.

Celeste screamed.

Elena dropped.

For one terrible second, she thought she had been hit.

Then she saw Dante.

He was still standing.

Marco wasn't.

His gun had fallen.

Blood spread across his hand.

Luca entered from the side door with a suppressed pistol raised.

“I said drop it.”

Marco stared at his injured hand.

Dante looked at Luca.

“You shot him.”

“He was becoming repetitive.”

Elena almost laughed.

Then sirens sounded outside.

Marco looked toward the loading doors.

His face changed.

“You called police?”

Dante looked offended.

“Of course not.”

Celeste raised her hand.

“I did.”

Everyone looked at her.

She shrugged.

“I run a foundation.”

Marco stared.

Celeste smiled.

“Public image.”

Minutes later, federal agents entered.

Not Chicago police.

Federal.

Marco finally looked afraid.

Elena frowned.

Dante looked at Celeste.

“What did you do?”

Celeste smiled through tears.

“I've been sending evidence to the FBI for eleven months.”

Dante stared.

“The files?”

“I took them.”

“The access logs?”

“Me.”

“The financial leaks?”

“Me.”

“You nearly collapsed my company.”

“I needed Marco to think I'd chosen him.”

Dante's face moved through anger, betrayal, understanding, and something like grief.

Celeste whispered, “I'm sorry.”

Dante closed his eyes.

Then opened them.

“You're an idiot.”

She laughed while crying.

“I know.”

He pulled her into his arms.

Elena turned away.

Not because the moment was private.

Because suddenly she wanted what they had.

A family damaged enough to hurt each other and still capable of reaching back.

Dante found her eyes over Celeste's shoulder.

His expression softened.

Then an FBI agent walked toward Elena.

“Ms. Caruso?”

“Yes?”

“We need to discuss the emergency hearing.”

Her stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“The judge moved it forward.”

“What time?”

The agent checked his watch.

“Twenty minutes.”

Dante released Celeste.

“That isn't enough time.”

“No.”

The agent looked at Elena.

“And there's another problem.”

“What?”

“Someone filed a new petition this morning.”

“Who?”

The agent's expression was grim.

“Your mother.”

Elena's blood went cold.

“No.”

He handed her the document.

Elena read the signature.

Helena Caruso.

Petition for permanent guardianship of Elena Caruso.

May you like

Elena stared.

After everything, her mother was trying to take control of her too.
