Chapter 11 - THE SISTER WHO RAN

Z

Naturally, Dante came.

Elena had expected nothing else.

The address led to an abandoned bank building on the South Side, closed since 2009.

Its limestone facade was covered in grime.

Three windows had been boarded.

A faded brass sign still carried the name:

MIDWESTERN MERCANTILE TRUST.

Elena stood across the street wearing jeans, boots, and Dante's dark coat because she had left without hers.

“You were explicitly uninvited.”

Dante checked the entrance.

“I've been excluded from better establishments.”

“Elena said don't bring Dante.”

“Sofia wrote it.”

“Yes.”

“She has questionable judgment.”

“So do I, apparently.”

Dante looked at her.

“Frequently.”

Elena glared.

He almost smiled.

Luca stood ten feet away talking into his sleeve microphone.

“No heat signatures on ground level. Two possible upstairs.”

Elena looked at him.

“You brought thermal imaging to a bank?”

Luca shrugged.

“I don't enjoy surprises.”

They crossed the street.

The front door was locked.

Dante examined it.

Elena reached past him and tried the handle.

It opened.

He looked at her.

“Excellent security assessment.”

“Thank you.”

Inside, dust covered the marble floor.

Old teller windows lined one wall.

Sofia's footprints were visible.

Elena followed them.

“You think she stole the key?”

Dante answered.

“Yes.”

“You think she's working with Vincent?”

“Possibly.”

“I don't.”

“Elena.”

“She could have killed me yesterday if she wanted the inheritance.”

“She didn't need to.”

“She also looked terrified when she saw Marco.”

“That can be real and still coexist with betrayal.”

Elena hated that answer because it was true.

They reached the vault corridor.

A steel security gate stood open.

Beyond it, safety deposit boxes lined both walls.

Sofia was there.

Alone.

Holding the brass key.

She turned when Elena entered.

Her eyes filled immediately.

“You brought him.”

Dante leaned against the doorway.

“I've been told.”

Sofia looked at Elena.

“You shouldn't be here.”

“Neither should you.”

“I needed to find it.”

“Find what?”

“The recordings.”

Dante stepped forward.

“How do you know about them?”

Sofia looked at him.

“My father talked when he drank.”

Marco.

Elena still refused to call him father in her head.

“He knew Anthony recorded meetings,” Sofia said. “He spent twenty years looking for them.”

“And you know which box?” Dante asked.

Sofia held up the key.

“312.”

They found it.

Elena inserted the key.

Nothing happened.

“It needs two keys,” Dante said.

Sofia frowned.

“Where's the second?”

A voice came from behind them.

“I have it.”

Everyone turned.

Vincent Orsini stood at the end of the corridor.

He looked exhausted.

Unshaven.

Older than Elena remembered from photographs.

A pistol hung loosely at his side.

Luca raised his weapon immediately.

“Drop it.”

Vincent didn't.

Dante stepped in front of Elena.

“Vincent.”

His voice could have frozen water.

Vincent looked at him.

“I didn't kill Anthony.”

“You cut his brakes.”

“Yes.”

Dante's jaw tightened.

Vincent continued.

“Because Marco had Marie.”

Dante said nothing.

“He told me he'd kill her.”

“And that excused it?”

“No.”

Vincent's eyes filled.

“Nothing excuses it.”

Elena watched Dante.

This was the man who had known Vincent almost twenty years.

Worked beside him.

Trusted him.

Maybe loved him in the strange way powerful men loved those who survived beside them.

Dante asked, “Why disappear?”

“Because Marco had people inside federal offices.”

Celeste had said the same thing about building her case quietly.

Vincent looked at Sofia.

“And because she contacted me.”

Elena turned.

“You knew Vincent?”

Sofia nodded.

“He helped me escape twice.”

“Twice?”

“Marco found me the first time.”

Vincent lowered the gun and placed it on the floor.

Luca kicked it away.

Then Vincent held up a second key.

“Anthony gave Gabriel one. Gabriel gave me the other.”

Dante frowned.

“Why?”

“So no one person could open the box.”

Vincent inserted his key.

Sofia inserted hers.

The compartment unlocked.

Elena pulled it open.

Inside were no tapes.

No drives.

No documents.

Just a black notebook.

And a photograph.

Dante picked up the photograph.

His father.

Anthony Moretti.

Gabriel Caruso.

Two younger men.

One was Marco.

The other—

Dante went still.

Elena looked.

“Who is that?”

Dante didn't answer.

Vincent did.

“Samuel Quinn.”

The Moretti general counsel.

Elena frowned.

“He said he was in New York.”

Vincent laughed bitterly.

“Samuel says many things.”

Dante opened the notebook.

Names.

Payments.

Dates.

Judges.

Police officers.

Politicians.

Construction contracts.

Union officials.

Enough corruption to collapse careers across Illinois.

But several entries near the end had been circled in red.

October 17, 2001.

A payment to a towing company.

A payment to a medical examiner.

A payment to—

Dante's face changed.

“What?”

Elena looked over his shoulder.

SAMUEL QUINN - $250,000.

Underneath:

AFTER ANTHONY.

Elena looked at Vincent.

“Samuel helped Marco kill Dante's father?”

Vincent shook his head.

“Worse.”

Dante's eyes lifted.

“What does worse mean?”

Vincent's expression was haunted.

“Samuel didn't work for Marco.”

Silence.

“He worked for Paolo.”

Dante's grandfather.

Dante stared.

“No.”

“Your grandfather knew Anthony was planning to cooperate.”

Dante's hand tightened around the notebook.

Vincent continued.

“Paolo believed Anthony would destroy the family.”

Celeste appeared in the doorway.

She had arrived behind Luca's backup team.

She heard enough.

“You're saying our grandfather ordered our father's death?”

Vincent looked at her.

“No.”

A beat.

“He ordered Samuel to stop Anthony.”

Dante's voice came out low.

“How?”

Vincent swallowed.

“By any means necessary.”

Celeste looked sick.

Dante turned pages.

There.

Another entry.

PAOLO M. AUTHORIZATION.

His face became empty.

Elena recognized what was happening.

His entire understanding of family was collapsing.

Gabriel had been good despite blood.

Marco had been evil despite blood.

Now Paolo—the grandfather Dante had worshiped—might have helped kill his own son to protect an empire.

The room felt airless.

Then Sofia pointed.

“There's something else.”

A folded page had been tucked inside the back cover.

Elena opened it.

It wasn't Anthony's handwriting.

It was newer.

Typed.

A list of current names.

Employees inside Moretti Development.

Bank accounts.

Encrypted access codes.

At the bottom:

PHASE TWO - UPON MARCO'S ARREST.

Dante stared.

“So Marco expected to be arrested.”

Vincent nodded.

“Yes.”

“And had a second operation ready.”

“Yes.”

“Run by who?”

Vincent didn't answer.

Dante stepped closer.

“Who?”

Vincent looked toward the bank entrance.

Then back at Dante.

“Samuel Quinn.”

A gunshot exploded upstairs.

Everyone ducked.

Luca shouted into his radio.

Another shot.

Then silence.

A security agent's voice crackled.

“Movement at the rear exit!”

Dante grabbed Elena's hand.

“Stay behind me.”

They reached the alley seconds later.

A black sedan was already disappearing around the corner.

Luca swore.

On the pavement lay one of Dante's men.

Alive.

Shot in the leg.

Beside him was a phone.

The screen lit.

Incoming video call.

UNKNOWN.

Dante answered.

Samuel Quinn appeared.

Silver hair.

Expensive suit.

Calm smile.

“Dante.”

Dante's face turned to stone.

Samuel continued.

“You found Anthony's notebook.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“You killed my father.”

“No.”

Samuel smiled.

“I saved your future.”

Dante's eyes became murderous.

Samuel leaned closer to the camera.

“And if Elena wants to keep hers, tell her to check the news.”

The call ended.

Elena pulled out her phone.

Every news alert carried the same headline.

FEDERAL PROSECUTORS INVESTIGATE DANTE MORETTI FOR RACKETEERING.

She looked at Dante.

His phone started ringing.

Then Celeste's.

Then Luca's.

May you like

The empire wasn't being attacked with bullets.

It was being buried alive.
