Chapter 15 - THE MORETTI MATRIARCH

Z
Isabella Moretti had been buried in 2014.
Dante had carried her coffin.
Celeste had delivered the eulogy.
Six hundred people attended the funeral.
There had been photographs in newspapers.
Elena learned all of that in thirty seconds while an allegedly dead woman spoke through warehouse speakers.
“This is getting ridiculous,” Elena whispered.
Adrian looked at her.
“What?”
“Dead relatives need to stay committed.”
Dante almost smiled.
Almost.
Then the loading doors slammed shut.
Luca raised his weapon.
“Secondary exits?”
“Two.”
A woman's voice replied through the speaker.
“Both locked, Luca.”
He stared upward.
“Isabella.”
“Still humorless, I see.”
Celeste stepped forward.
“Grandmother?”
Silence.
Then a side door opened.
An elderly woman entered.
Seventy-eight, perhaps eighty.
White hair pinned perfectly.
Black coat.
Pearls.
She walked with a cane.
No guards.
She didn't need them.
Dante looked at her as if staring at a ghost because that was exactly what she was.
Isabella stopped ten feet away.
“My beautiful grandchildren.”
Celeste's face crumpled.
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“You let us bury you.”
“Yes.”
Elena muttered, “Apparently that's generational.”
Isabella's eyes shifted toward her.
“You must be Elena.”
“I've been told.”
“You have Gabriel's attitude.”
“That's the nicest thing anybody has said to me this week.”
Isabella smiled.
Dante did not.
“Where is Grace?”
His grandmother looked at him.
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“Safe.”
“That's not an address.”
“Still impatient.”
Dante stepped forward.
Luca moved with him.
Isabella sighed.
“You won't shoot me.”
“Don't build plans around sentiment.”
Her smile faded slightly.
Good.
Elena realized Dante had learned something from Marco.
Family did not guarantee obedience.
“Why?” Celeste whispered.
Isabella looked at her granddaughter.
“Because men destroyed this family.”
Dante laughed.
“You partnered with Samuel Quinn.”
“Men can be useful.”
“Marco?”
“A useful animal.”
“Grandfather?”
Isabella's expression hardened.
“A coward.”
Dante stared.
“He built the empire you spent your life defending.”
“He built a prison.”
That sentence silenced everyone.
Isabella looked at Elena.
“Your father Gabriel understood.”
“Which one?”
The old woman smiled again.
“Elena.”
“I'm serious.”
“Gabriel.”
“Good.”
Isabella walked toward a chair and sat.
“Anthony wanted the families out.”
Dante's eyes narrowed.
“You knew.”
“I encouraged him.”
“Then why did Paolo stop him?”
“Because your grandfather believed Moretti power mattered more than Moretti lives.”
Celeste looked sick.
“And you?”
“I believed power mattered only if I controlled it.”
There it was.
Elena recognized the disease immediately.
Marco had it.
Paolo had it.
Samuel had it.
Control disguised as protection.
Isabella continued.
“After Anthony died, I realized Paolo would destroy you too.”
“So you faked your death thirteen years later?”
“Yes.”
“That is a significant delay.”
“I needed infrastructure.”
Dante stared.
“What infrastructure?”
“Accounts. Shell companies. loyal trustees. federal contacts.”
Elena understood.
“You built a second empire.”
Isabella looked pleased.
“Quietly.”
“And Samuel works for you.”
“Yes.”
“Marco?”
“Never knowingly.”
Dante's face hardened.
“You manipulated both.”
“Marco believed Samuel belonged to him. Samuel believed Marco was useful. Paolo believed I was grieving.”
Celeste whispered, “And us?”
For the first time Isabella's face softened.
“I watched you.”
Celeste stepped back as though struck.
“You watched?”
“Yes.”
“You let me cry over your grave every birthday.”
“I kept you alive.”
“No.”
Celeste's voice cracked.
“You watched.”
Isabella looked irritated by the distinction.
Elena saw it immediately.
So did Dante.
“You don't love us,” Dante said.
Isabella's eyes snapped toward him.
“Don't be absurd.”
“You love outcomes.”
“Dante.”
“You love versions of us that fit your plan.”
“That plan preserved the Moretti family.”
“No.”
Dante glanced at Elena.
Then at Celeste.
“It preserved the Moretti name.”
Isabella stood.
“Same thing.”
“No.”
Elena almost smiled.
He had learned that difference too.
Isabella looked at Elena.
“You've influenced him.”
Elena shook her head.
“He had a functioning brain before I arrived.”
“You are temporary.”
Dante's expression changed.
Elena felt it before he spoke.
“Careful.”
Isabella smiled thinly.
“There he is.”
Dante stepped closer.
“You threatened Grace.”
“I protected her.”
“You kidnapped her.”
“To keep Samuel from improvising.”
Adrian lunged forward.
“Where is my daughter?”
Luca stopped him.
Isabella sighed.
“Grace is with her mother.”
Adrian froze.
“What?”
“Megan is alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Canada.”
Adrian stared.
Isabella continued.
“I removed Grace before Samuel could use her. The photograph was staged.”
Adrian looked ready to collapse.
“You made me think she was going to die.”
“I needed you compliant.”
Elena stepped forward.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed at Isabella.
“That sentence.”
“What sentence?”
“That's the one.”
Isabella stared.
“The one people in this family keep using before they do something unforgivable.”
“Elena—”
“I needed you compliant.”
She looked at Dante.
“Marco needed Adrian compliant. Mom needed me compliant. Paolo needed Anthony compliant.”
Then back at Isabella.
“You are all the same when you say that.”
The old woman's face hardened.
“You know nothing about survival.”
Elena touched the fading bruise on her cheek.
“I know exactly what survival looks like.”
She stepped closer.
“And it doesn't look like controlling people until they stop belonging to themselves.”
Silence.
Dante's eyes stayed on Elena.
Isabella looked almost impressed.
“Gabriel would have liked you.”
“He did.”
That answer landed.
Isabella turned toward Dante.
“I can end the federal case.”
“How?”
“Samuel has already signed a confession.”
Dante's eyes narrowed.
“To Hale's murder?”
“Yes.”
“And Anthony?”
“Everything.”
Celeste stared.
“Why would he?”
“Because I promised to protect his family.”
Dante laughed coldly.
“You mean control them.”
Isabella ignored it.
“I can restore your board position permanently.”
“I never lost it.”
“I can destroy Bellini Holdings.”
“Elena and Sofia own part of it.”
“I know.”
“Then you don't touch it.”
The warehouse went quiet.
Isabella's expression changed.
There.
A line had been drawn.
Dante had placed Elena's interest over expansion.
Perhaps Isabella had never seen a Moretti do that.
“You would sacrifice dominance for her?”
Dante answered without hesitation.
“Yes.”
Elena's heart stopped.
Isabella studied him.
Then smiled.
“Anthony really did win.”
Dante frowned.
“What?”
“Your father believed power could stop with one generation.”
She reached into her coat.
Luca raised his gun.
Isabella pulled out a folder.
She handed it to Dante.
Inside were signed documents.
Samuel's confession.
Financial records.
Accounts.
Names.
Enough to dismantle Marco's remaining network.
Dante looked up.
“What do you want?”
Isabella smiled.
“Nothing.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“People like you never want nothing.”
The smile disappeared.
“Fine.”
She looked at Elena.
“I want her trust vote.”
Elena laughed.
“Absolutely not.”
“One vote.”
“For what?”
“A merger.”
Dante's face hardened.
“Between Moretti Development and Bellini Holdings.”
Isabella nodded.
“Consolidate both families.”
“Under whose control?”
She looked directly at Elena.
“Yours.”
Elena stared.
“You're insane.”
“No.”
Isabella smiled.
“You're the only person both bloodlines can claim.”
“I don't want either bloodline.”
“That is precisely why you're qualified.”
Dante said nothing.
Elena looked at him.
“You're not seriously considering this.”
His eyes remained on Isabella.
“No.”
Elena exhaled.
Then Isabella said softly,
“You should.”
She opened one final document.
A confidential acquisition notice.
Elena read the buyer name.
Her blood went cold.
Someone had quietly purchased seventeen percent of Moretti Development.
Not Marco.
Not Samuel.
Not Isabella.
A company called Asterion Capital.
Dante stared.
“Who owns it?”
Isabella's expression turned grim.
“That is the problem.”
May you like
She looked at Elena.
“Nobody knows.”
