Chapter 9 - The Truth Lorenzo Could Never Tell Her

Sophia confronted Lorenzo immediately.

He was sitting in the garden, reading a book.

She placed the clipping on the table.

“What did you lie about?”

Lorenzo sighed.

“I hoped you would never see that.”

“I deserve the truth.”

“Yes.”

He closed the book.

“There was another heir.”

Sophia felt the world shift.

“Who?”

“Your older sister.”

Sophia stared.

“My what?”

“Her name was Isabella.”

Lorenzo explained that Marcella had given birth to twins.

Sophia and Isabella.

During the coup, the babies were separated.

Marcella escaped with Sophia.

Another group escaped with Isabella.

For years, Lorenzo believed Isabella had died.

But the records suggested otherwise.

Sophia stood.

“Where is she?”

“We don’t know.”

“Then find her.”

Matteo entered the garden.

He heard the last sentence.

“What happened?”

Sophia turned.

“I have a sister.”

Matteo’s expression became serious.

“When?”

“Since birth.”

They began searching.

Weeks turned into months.

Every archive was examined.

Every old witness was interviewed.

Eventually, they found a name.

Isabella Bellini had been registered under a different surname in Florence.

She was alive.

Sophia traveled there.

The woman standing on the doorstep looked uncannily familiar.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

Same habit of tilting her head when nervous.

Sophia whispered, “Isabella?”

The woman began to cry.

“You found me.”

They embraced.

For hours they talked.

Isabella had been raised by a family who believed her parents died in a political conflict.

She had never known she was royal.

She had built an ordinary life.

She did not want a title.

Neither did Sophia.

They laughed at the absurdity of becoming sisters after nearly three decades apart.

Then Isabella revealed something.

“I know who separated us.”

Sophia looked at her.

“Who?”

“My foster mother.”

She explained that the woman who raised her had once worked with Clara.

But there was another name.

A man who had paid her.

Matteo’s uncle.

Sophia froze.

Yet the truth was more complicated.

The uncle had not ordered the separation.

He had arranged it to save Isabella after discovering assassins searching for both children.

He had created two false identities so the sisters could not be found together.

Sophia finally understood.

All those years of secrecy had not always been betrayal.

Sometimes secrecy had been survival.

She returned to Milan with Isabella.

The first time both sisters entered the Room of Eight Stars, they stood side by side before the crown.

Matteo watched from a distance.

Sophia took Isabella’s hand.

“We survived.”

Isabella smiled.

“We did more than survive.”

They decided that neither would claim a throne.

Instead, they would become co-trustees of the Venturi Foundation.

The announcement was celebrated across Italy.

The story that had begun with violence was ending with two sisters choosing service instead of power.

But Victor Orsini was not finished.

From prison, he sent one final message.

Matteo received it.

“Come alone.”

Matteo refused.

Victor laughed over the prison phone.

“I have information about Lorenzo.”

“What?”

“He wasn’t the only survivor.”

Matteo hung up.

Sophia noticed his face.

“What?”

“Victor says someone else from your family survived.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

They investigated.

The truth emerged slowly.

King Alessandro had survived the initial attack.

Sophia’s grandfather had lived for years in hiding.

He had been the mysterious adviser who sent Matteo searching nine years earlier.

The dying royal adviser Matteo thought was merely an old official had actually been her grandfather.

He had watched Sophia from afar.

He had known exactly where she was.

He had chosen not to reveal himself.

Why?

Because the final enemy had not been Victor.

It had been someone inside the palace.

Someone whose name had never appeared in the archive.

Sophia returned to the old palace ruins.

There, beneath the throne room, she discovered a hidden chamber.

Inside was one final recording.

Her grandfather appeared on screen.

“My beloved grandchildren,” he began.

Sophia cried at the word.

Grandchildren.

Plural.

“My daughter Marcella protected Sophia.”

“My son Lorenzo protected Isabella.”

“And Matteo Duca protected them both without knowing why.”

Matteo stood beside Sophia.

Her grandfather continued.

“I arranged the search because I knew the old enemies would return.”

He named the final conspirator.

A former family adviser who had lived under an assumed identity for decades.

The man had secretly manipulated Victor.

He had also arranged the forged letters.

Sophia and Matteo found him in a quiet Swiss village.

He was old.

He did not resist.

He only said, “The world forgot your family.”

Sophia answered,

“No. We remembered.”

He died months later in custody, taking the last unanswered questions with him.

And at last, there was peace.
