Chapter 6 - The Queen’s Choice

Sophia stared at her father.
“You gave Victor the map?”
Lorenzo nodded.
“I did.”
Matteo immediately reached for his gun.
Sophia stepped between them.
“Wait.”
Lorenzo raised his hands.
“I knew he would take it.”
“Why?”
“Because the map is incomplete.”
Matteo stopped.
Lorenzo smiled faintly.
“The real location is encoded in the crown.”
Sophia took it from her bag.
The eight stars caught the light.
“Then Victor has been chasing the wrong room.”
“He has been chasing the room everyone expected.”
Lorenzo pointed to the white lily.
“The flower is not decoration.”
Sophia turned the crown.
One of the petals moved.
A tiny compartment opened beneath it.
Inside was a sliver of paper.
Sophia unfolded it.
The message contained coordinates.
Not Rome.
Not Milan.
Sardinia.
An island property once owned by the Venturi crown.
“The final archive is under the sea,” Matteo said.
Lorenzo nodded.
“Your mother moved it after the coup.”
Sophia looked at the crown.
“She knew one day someone would come.”
“She believed you would.”
For the first time, Sophia understood her mother’s strange certainty.
She had not spent her life hiding the future.
She had been preserving it.
The journey to Sardinia began before sunrise.
The weather turned rough.
The sea struck against the boat carrying them toward the abandoned Venturi property.
Matteo stood at the bow.
Sophia joined him.
“You’re quiet.”
“I’m thinking.”
“Dangerous.”
He looked at her.
She smiled.
It was the first genuine smile either of them had shared since Rome.
“We might not survive this.”
“We will.”
“You sound certain.”
“I learned that from you.”
“Really?”
“You always act like you have three plans.”
“I usually do.”
“Usually?”
He laughed.
It was brief.
But Sophia remembered it.
Hours later, they reached the island.
The abandoned palace stood above a cliff.
Its walls were cracked by salt and time.
Inside, Sophia found eight statues arranged around a circular room.
Each statue held a stone lily.
She placed the crown in the center.
The floor opened.
Below them was a vault.
Gold documents.
Royal seals.
A recording.
And dozens of names.
Sophia picked up the first file.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Victor.
Council members.
Judges.
Business leaders.
Even foreign intermediaries.
Everything had been documented.
Then Sophia saw a familiar name.
Matteo.
She froze.
“What?”
He came closer.
His name appeared beside a transaction from seven years earlier.
Sophia looked at him.
“You were involved.”
Matteo stared at the page.
“That transaction was before we met.”
“Seven years ago.”
“Yes.”
“What was it?”
He picked up the document.
“I don’t know.”
Sophia felt the old fear return.
Then she noticed something.
The signature was wrong.
Matteo’s initials were forged.
Beneath the transaction was another line.
Funds redirected to Orsini Foundation.
Matteo looked at Sophia.
“He forged my name.”
“Why?”
“To make it look like I had inherited the operation.”
They were interrupted by applause.
Victor walked into the chamber.
“Very good.”
Guards surrounded them.
Victor smiled.
“You finally brought me everything.”
Sophia stepped forward.
“You killed my family.”
“I preserved what remained.”
“You murdered my father.”
Victor laughed.
“No. Lorenzo was always too clever to die when he was supposed to.”
Lorenzo appeared behind Sophia.
Victor’s smile faded.
“You.”
“Yes.”
Lorenzo raised his chin.
“You failed.”
Victor looked at Sophia.
“Did you really think the crown made you powerful?”
“No.”
Sophia stepped closer.
“It made me visible.”
Victor’s expression changed.
“Exactly.”
Matteo understood first.
“You wanted her to activate the archive.”
Victor smiled.
“I needed proof from the rightful heir.”
Sophia looked at the hidden cameras.
“You recorded everything.”
Victor nodded.
The room was wired.
He wanted her declaration.
Her acceptance.
Her confirmation.
He wanted to use her as the legal instrument that would legitimize his seizure of the Venturi assets.
Sophia smiled.
“I know.”
Victor frowned.
“What?”
“You said I activated the archive.”
She held up the crown.
“It opened for me.”
“Yes.”
“But it also opened something else.”
A panel behind Victor clicked.
An emergency transmission began.
Every file in the archive uploaded to an international legal network.
Victor’s face drained of color.
Matteo had connected the vault to an independent server before arriving.
Victor turned toward his men.
“Stop it!”
Gunfire erupted.
Matteo pulled Sophia behind a stone column.
The chamber became chaos.
Victor escaped through a side passage.
Sophia followed him.
“Where are you going?”
“To finish this.”
Matteo grabbed her arm.
She turned.
“I have spent my whole life running.”
“We are not running.”
“Then let me stop him.”
He looked at her.
“You don’t have to become violent to become powerful.”
Sophia swallowed.
“And what do I do?”
“Tell the truth.”
They found Victor at the edge of the cliff.
Police lights appeared on the distant road.
The files had already reached investigators.
Victor looked trapped.
“You think this changes anything?”
Sophia approached slowly.
“You were afraid of one thing.”
“What?”
“That I would grow up and remember who I was.”
Victor stared at her.
“You have no idea what ruling costs.”
“No.”
Sophia nodded.
“But I know what hiding costs.”
Victor raised his weapon.
Matteo moved.
Sophia shouted, “Stop!”
Victor hesitated.
That instant was enough.
His own security man knocked the weapon away.
The files had been released.
The men who served him knew the game was over.
Victor fell to his knees.
Sophia stood before him.
“I am not your queen.”
Victor looked confused.
“I am my own person.”
She turned away.
May you like
And for the first time, the crown was not above her.
It was behind her.
