Chapter 7 - The Crown Without a Throne

The scandal shook Europe.
Within days, every major newspaper published documents from the hidden archive.
Government investigations began.
Accounts were frozen.
Properties were seized.
Victor Orsini was arrested.
Several members of the old council disappeared before questioning.
Others surrendered.
Sophia became a public figure almost overnight.
She hated it.
She hated cameras.
She hated reporters shouting questions.
She hated strangers calling her “Your Majesty.”
So she did something nobody expected.
She refused the throne.
At a press conference in Rome, she stood before a wall of cameras.
“I have been told that I was born to rule.”
She paused.
“But I was also raised to choose.”
She announced that the restored Venturi foundation would become a public charitable trust.
The properties would support scholarships, medical research, housing programs, and historical preservation.
She would retain the family heritage.
She would not claim absolute authority.
The announcement stunned the council.
Matteo watched from the back of the room.
He did not smile.
He simply looked proud.
Afterward, Sophia found him outside.
“You were hiding.”
“I dislike cameras.”
“So do I.”
“You handled them well.”
She folded her arms.
“Was that a compliment?”
“Yes.”
“Then I’ll remember the date.”
They returned to Milan.
Life should have become simpler.
It did not.
Sophia’s new position attracted people who wanted access.
Old relatives emerged.
New advisers appeared.
Marriage proposals arrived from wealthy families across Europe.
Sophia rejected all of them.
One evening, she found Matteo standing on the balcony outside his office.
“You’re thinking too loudly.”
He looked at her.
“I’m deciding something.”
“What?”
“Whether I should resign.”
Sophia’s smile disappeared.
“Why?”
“Because everyone assumes I will control you.”
“I don’t care what everyone assumes.”
“I do.”
She stepped closer.
“You spent nine years searching for me.”
“Yes.”
“You protected me without knowing who I was.”
“Yes.”
“You gave me choices when everyone else wanted to make them for me.”
He remained silent.
Sophia asked softly, “Why would you leave now?”
Matteo looked at the city.
“Because I’m in love with you.”
Silence.
Sophia’s heart pounded.
He turned.
“I didn’t intend to say it.”
She smiled.
“You’re terrible at timing.”
“I know.”
“I’ve been waiting for you to say it.”
His expression changed.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“You look at me differently.”
Matteo stepped closer.
“How?”
“Like I’m not a problem to solve.”
He took her hand.
“You never were.”
She kissed him.
There was no crown.
No audience.
No royal announcement.
Just two people who had spent years crossing paths without understanding why.
Then the next morning, another problem arrived.
A DNA test had surfaced.
A man claimed to be Sophia’s half-brother.
His name was Adrian.
He carried documents proving he was Lorenzo’s son from a previous relationship.
Sophia met him privately.
He looked nervous.
“I don’t want anything.”
She studied him.
“Then why come?”
“Because I think I can help.”
He placed a folder on the table.
Inside was an old photograph.
Clara.
Victor.
And another man.
Matteo’s uncle.
Sophia looked at Matteo.
His jaw tightened.
“My uncle disappeared ten years ago.”
Adrian nodded.
“He didn’t disappear.”
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
Sophia looked at the photograph.
Someone had circled the uncle’s face.
Underneath was a handwritten note.
HE KNOWS WHERE THE MONEY WENT.
Matteo clenched his fist.
May you like
The war might have ended.
But the truth had not.
