Chapter 8 - The Last Secret of the Duca Family

Matteo found his uncle’s trail in Naples.

The old warehouse had been abandoned for years.

Sophia insisted on coming.

This time, he did not argue.

Inside, they found coded shipping records and photographs.

The documents revealed that Matteo’s uncle had secretly moved royal assets during the coup.

But he had also stolen some.

Sophia read the records.

“He took money.”

Matteo nodded.

“Looks like it.”

“Why?”

“To finance his escape.”

They discovered a second layer beneath the records.

The stolen assets had been transferred into accounts belonging to poor families displaced by the coup.

Matteo stared.

“He didn’t steal it for himself.”

Sophia smiled sadly.

“He redistributed it.”

Another note explained that Matteo’s uncle had become an anonymous benefactor.

For years, he had funded schools and shelters under false names.

Then they found a letter.

It was addressed to Matteo.

I KNOW YOU WILL HATE ME FOR HIDING THIS.

Matteo read on.

Your father was never part of the conspiracy. I forged documents to make him appear guilty because Victor’s men were watching me.

I believed the lie would keep our family alive.

I was wrong.

Sophia touched his arm.

“You were raised on a lie too.”

Matteo looked at her.

“So were you.”

They found one final location.

A small house in Naples.

Inside lived Matteo’s uncle.

Older.

Sick.

But alive.

The reunion was painful.

Matteo did not hug him.

“Why?”

His uncle looked down.

“Because I was afraid.”

“You let me believe my father betrayed everything.”

“I thought if you hated him, you would stop searching.”

“You knew I would search.”

“Yes.”

Sophia stood nearby.

The uncle looked at her.

“You look like your mother.”

Sophia’s expression softened.

“Did you love her?”

“Yes.”

“Did my father trust you?”

“Until the night he disappeared.”

He gave Sophia a sealed envelope.

“Your mother wrote this.”

Sophia opened it.

My daughter,

The world will tell you that your blood gives you power.

It does not.

Your choices do.

Do not restore this family by becoming what destroyed it.

Build something better.

And choose the person who sees the woman before the crown.

Sophia looked up.

Matteo was watching her.

She smiled.

Her mother had known.

Perhaps she had known from the beginning.

They returned to Milan.

Weeks passed.

Sophia established the Venturi Foundation.

Matteo began dismantling several illegal operations inside his own empire.

Some employees left.

Others stayed.

His business became smaller.

Cleaner.

Harder.

But finally honest.

One evening, Matteo gave Sophia a key.

She recognized it.

“The Room of Eight Stars.”

He nodded.

“I had it restored.”

She followed him underground beneath the Duca estate.

The circular chamber had been transformed.

The weapons were gone.

The hidden ledgers had been removed.

In the center stood a long table surrounded by photographs of the people who had protected the Venturi family.

Her mother.

Her father.

Matteo’s grandfather.

Clara.

And others whose names had almost disappeared from history.

Sophia cried quietly.

“You did this.”

“We did.”

She looked at the empty velvet stand.

“Where’s the crown?”

Matteo opened another door.

Beyond it was a glass case.

The crown rested inside.

Not hidden.

Not used as leverage.

Simply preserved.

Sophia stood before it.

“I don’t want to wear it.”

Matteo smiled.

“You don’t have to.”

“I thought I wanted it.”

“What do you want now?”

She turned.

“You.”

His face softened.

“And tomorrow?”

“You.”

“And after that?”

Sophia laughed.

“Maybe breakfast.”

He kissed her forehead.

“That can be arranged.”

Outside, Milan glowed beneath the evening sky.

For the first time in generations, the Duca and Venturi families were no longer enemies.

But one final piece remained unresolved.

Sophia received an anonymous letter.

Inside was an old newspaper clipping.

At the bottom was a handwritten line.

YOUR FATHER LIED ABOUT ONE MORE THING.
