Chapter 9 - THE BETRAYAL OF MARKUS

The revelation hung in the penthouse air like smoke.
I wasn't just a random woman swept up in a mob war.
I had been chosen from the very beginning.
Before I could process the full weight of his confession, the security console in the hallway shrieked with a deafening alarm.
Red strobe lights flashed across the ceiling.
“Boss!” Marcus’s voice roared through the intercom, sounding panicked and distorted.
“Morena’s men breached the underground loading bay! They have heavy artillery!”
Daniel grabbed his pistol from the coffee table.
“Marcus, seal the lower elevator banks!” Daniel commanded.
“I tried!” Marcus shouted back.
“The electronic overrides aren't responding! Someone inside the penthouse disabled the security grid!”
Daniel went completely rigid.
His gray eyes darted toward the hidden bookshelf panel.
Then toward the reinforced doors.
“Marcus isn't in the security room,” Daniel whispered, horror dawning on his face.
“He’s right outside.”
The double doors of the penthouse exploded inward!
Wood splinters showered across the room.
Marcus stood in the doorway, holding an assault rifle.
He didn't look like a loyal enforcer anymore.
He looked like a man who had just sold his soul for Morena’s millions.
“It’s over, Daniel,” Marcus sneered, his finger twitching on the trigger.
“You went soft because of a bookstore clerk.”
May you like
“You let a woman cloud your judgment.”
“And now the syndicate goes to me.”
