Chapter 6 - THE WAR AT OUR DOORSTEP

The panic room behind the bookshelf clicked open.
“Inside, Emily,” Daniel ordered, his hand resting on the butt of a concealed pistol.
“No,” I said, planting my feet firmly on the hardwood floor.
“I am not hiding in a closet while you fight for your life.”
“This isn't a movie, Emily!” Daniel snapped, his gray eyes flashing with sudden fury.
“Morena’s men are carrying automatic weapons!”
“And I am not leaving you alone!” I shouted back, stepping right into his space.
“You brought me into your world, Daniel!”
“You can't treat me like porcelain now!”
Daniel stared at me for three agonizing seconds.
A muscle ticked in his jaw.
Then he let out a harsh, defeated breath.
“Stay behind me,” he growled, drawing his weapon.
“If anyone steps through that door, you shoot them, do you understand?”
“I know how to handle a gun, Daniel,” I said, pulling a small silver snub-nosed revolver from my handbag—a gift from my police officer uncle years ago.
Daniel raised an eyebrow in genuine surprise.
“You never cease to amaze me, Emily Carter.”
Heavy boots pounded against the hallway outside the penthouse.
The reinforced oak doors shuddered under the force of a battering ram.
Bang!
Bang!
The heavy brass locks splintered.
The doors burst open.
Three masked men in tactical gear flooded into the living room, raising their assault rifles.
Daniel fired twice with lethal precision.
The lead intruder dropped instantly.
The remaining two returned heavy gunfire, shattering the glass coffee table and riddling the walls with bullets.
I dropped to one knee, steadying my breathing.
When the second gunman turned his weapon toward Daniel’s blind side, I squeezed the trigger.
The gunshot echoed deafeningly in the penthouse.
The gunman dropped his rifle and slumped against the marble kitchen island.
The third attacker threw down his weapon and tried to flee toward the elevator, only to be intercepted by Marcus and three armed guards bursting in from the secure stairwell.

Silence returned to the penthouse.
Only the sound of smoke detectors hissing filled the air.
