Chapter 8 - The High Society Gala and the Stolen Diamonds

Two days later, the annual Autumn Charity Gala was held at the Chicago Cultural Center.

It was the premier social event of the year—an evening where the city’s political elite, corporate titans, and old-money dynasties gathered under the world’s largest Tiffany stained-glass dome.

Vanessa Bellini and her father had spent six months organizing the event. Salvatore was scheduled to deliver the keynote address, and Vanessa had intended to make her grand public debut as the future Mrs. Moretti.

Instead, they were standing near the marble columns of the grand ballroom, desperate, isolated, and frantic.

Word of the broken engagement had spread through the city like wildfire. Several major logistics companies had already pulled their funding from Salvatore’s political campaign, and bank representatives had spent the morning freezing the Bellini family’s corporate credit lines.

"Salvatore, you have to talk to the Mayor!" Vanessa hissed, clutching her champagne flute so tightly her knuckles were white. She was wearing a flamboyant sapphire gown, but her makeup couldn't hide the dark circles of fury beneath her eyes. "If Marco Varga doesn't get those port passcodes tonight, he’s going to release the offshore bank records!"

"The Mayor won't even look at me!" Salvatore whispered back, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Luca Moretti called him at eight this morning. One word from Luca, and I'm political poison in this city!"

Suddenly, the heavy bronze doors of the ballroom swung open.

The master of ceremonies stepped to the microphone. "Announcing Mr. Luca Moretti."

The chatter in the massive hall ceased instantly. Hundreds of heads turned toward the grand staircase.

Luca walked down the red carpet, looking devastatingly handsome in a custom-tailored black tuxedo.

And on his arm, holding her head high beneath the dazzling light of three thousand stained-glass panels, was me.

I wore a midnight-blue velvet evening gown that swept the marble floor, cut with a high, elegant collar that completely concealed the bandages on my back. A delicate diamond necklace—a heirloom from Luca’s mother—rested against my collarbone.

A collective gasp rippled through the high-society crowd.

"Is that... is that the maid?" a senator’s wife whispered behind her fan.

"She looks like royalty," a shipping magnate muttered in awe.

Vanessa’s champagne flute shattered on the marble floor.

Her face turned a mottled shade of purple. "What is she doing here?! In Sofia Moretti’s diamonds?!"

Luca led me gracefully through the crowd, acknowledging the respectful nods of city leaders and European ambassadors. His hand rested warmly over mine on his arm, steadying me as the gaze of the entire city bore down upon us.

"You're doing magnificent, Emma," Luca murmured, his lips curving into a faint, proud smile. "Keep your eyes on the horizon."

Before we could reach the VIP lounge, Vanessa barged through the circle of guests, blocking our path. Her eyes were bloodshot with pure venom.

"Luca!" Vanessa shrieked, ignoring the horrified stares of the surrounding socialites. "Have you completely lost your mind?! You bring a common, thieving servant to the Autumn Gala?! In your mother's necklace?!"

The entire ballroom went dead silent. The string quartet stopped playing.

Luca didn't flinch. He looked at her as if she were a speck of dust on his lapel. "The only thief in this room, Vanessa, is the woman who forged legal documents and attempted to commit fraud against my family."

"She stole those diamonds!" Vanessa screamed, pointing a trembling finger at my throat. "I saw her take them from your estate safe three days ago! Security! Arrest this woman!"

Two private security officers assigned to the gala stepped forward, looking extremely uncomfortable.

Luca raised a single hand. The guards stopped dead in their tracks.

"Before anyone makes an arrest," Luca announced, his deep voice carrying across the silent hall, "perhaps we should ask Detective Miller from the Cook County Financial Crimes Division to step forward."

A tall, sharp-featured man in a dark suit walked out from the VIP section, holding a thick leather dossier and a pair of steel handcuffs.

Vanessa’s breath caught in her throat. "What... what is this?"

Detective Miller stopped directly in front of Salvatore and Vanessa Bellini.

"Salvatore Bellini, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit maritime wire fraud, racketeering, and grand embezzlement," Detective Miller said, pulling out a warrant. "And Vanessa Bellini, you are under arrest for corporate identity theft, forgery, and conspiracy to solicit murder-for-hire."

A wave of loud shouts and gasps echoed across the ballroom. Photographers began snapping flashes in rapid succession.

"Murder-for-hire?!" Salvatore gasped, turning on his daughter in absolute horror. "Vanessa, what did you do?!"

"It's a lie!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing as Detective Miller’s partner grabbed her wrists and snapped the steel cuffs around them. "Luca! You set me up! Marco Varga will tear your shipping lines to pieces! You hear me?! You're dead, Luca!"

"Marco Varga was arrested at the Gary rail yards forty minutes ago," Luca said calmly, taking a sip of sparkling water from a passing waiter's tray. "All twenty of his associates are in federal custody. The Varga syndicate no longer exists in this state."

Vanessa’s screams echoed all the way out into the cold autumn night as the police dragged her and her disgraced father down the marble steps of the Cultural Center in full view of every television camera in Chicago.

Luca turned to me. He gently reached up and adjusted the diamond necklace against my throat.

"Shall we have that dance now, Emma?" he asked softly.
