Chapter 11 - The Public Execution of a Socialite’s Pride

Two weeks later, the Cook County Criminal Courthouse was packed to maximum capacity.
Every major news network in Chicago had cameras stationed outside the granite pillars. The trial of Vanessa Bellini and Salvatore Bellini had become the biggest media spectacle of the decade.
Vanessa sat at the defense table, wearing a drab, oversized orange prison jumpsuit. Her signature blonde hair was limp and unwashed, her face pale and sunken without her expensive cosmetics. Salvatore sat beside her, staring at his chained wrists in complete, broken defeat.
The courtroom fell into an absolute hush as the heavy oak doors opened.
Luca Moretti walked into the gallery, exuding an aura of untouchable power in a tailored midnight-blue suit.
And beside him, holding his hand with quiet grace, was me.
I wore an elegant ivory pantsuit, my hair styled in soft waves, the brilliant emerald engagement ring sparkling under the fluorescent courtroom lights for every camera to see.
Vanessa’s head snapped toward us. When her eyes landed on the emerald ring on my finger, her mouth dropped open in absolute, unhinged shock.
"Your Honor!" Vanessa shrieked, jumping to her feet, her chains rattling violently against the wooden table. "Look at her! She stole my life! She was my maid! She scrubbed my floors!"
"Silence in the court!" the judge slammed his gavel down with a thunderous crack. "One more outburst from the defendant and she will be removed to the holding cells!"
The federal prosecutor stepped to the podium.
"Your Honor, we present Exhibit A: the authenticated digital audio logs recovered from the Southlake Emergency Clinic, along with the financial wire transfers from the Bellini offshore accounts to the Varga syndicate."
For the next two hours, every dirty secret, every forged signature, and every horrific plan Vanessa had concocted was laid bare for the entire world to hear.
The court listened in disgust as Vanessa’s recorded voice played over the speakers: Just put the old hound down and burn the carcass. Make sure the maid takes the blame. If she talks, I'll destroy her sick mother.
Several jury members looked at Vanessa with open revulsion.
The prosecutor then called me to the witness stand.
I walked up to the stand with complete confidence, my head held high. I took the oath, sat down, and looked directly across the courtroom into Vanessa’s hateful eyes.
"Miss Collins," the prosecutor asked. "Did you ever attack or provoke the defendant on the afternoon of October fourteenth?"
"No," I replied, my voice ringing clear and calm through the room. "I simply refused to let her illegally destroy an animal that did not belong to her. She assaulted me from behind, tore my uniform, and threatened my dying mother's life."
"And what was Mr. Luca Moretti's reaction when he discovered the truth?"
I looked at Luca, who was watching me from the front row with pure pride and devotion in his eyes.
"Mr. Moretti did what any honorable man would do," I said. "He protected the innocent, punished the guilty, and saved a life."
The jury took less than forty minutes to deliberate.
"On the count of conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire: Guilty. On the count of grand embezzlement: Guilty. On the count of aggravated animal cruelty and corporate forgery: Guilty."
The judge looked down at Vanessa from the bench with stern, unyielding judgment.
"Vanessa Bellini, your actions demonstrate a profound lack of human empathy, narcissism, and depravity. I sentence you to twenty-two years at the Logan Correctional Center without the possibility of parole."
"No!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing wildly as four bailiffs grabbed her arms and forced her toward the holding cells. "Luca! Look at me! You can't let them do this! Emma, you filthy little servant, I’ll kill you!"

Her hysterical screams faded down the concrete corridor as the heavy steel door slammed shut behind her, sealing her fate forever.
Luca stood up in the gallery, extended his arm to me as I stepped down from the witness stand, and led me out of the courthouse through a sea of flashing cameras and cheering spectators.
