Chapter 10 - The Unmarked Vault Beneath the Estate

By midnight, the estate had been completely secured.
Reinforced steel shutters were drawn over the windows, an additional twenty-man security detail had been deployed along the perimeter, and the local police captain—a man loyal to the Moretti family—had quietly removed the intruders in unmarked vans.
Dr. Harris had visited to check on Bruno’s bruised hip and ensure my stitches hadn't reopened during the scuffle. Aside from a few minor bruises, both of us were entirely unharmed.
In the master suite on the second floor, a massive fire crackled in the stone hearth.
I was sitting on the edge of the plush sofa, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, holding a warm mug of chamomile tea with trembling hands. Bruno was fast asleep on the rug in front of the fire, his head resting peacefully against Luca’s leather slippers.
Luca walked out of the adjoining bathroom, having changed into a clean black sweater and dark trousers. He sat down beside me on the sofa, taking the trembling mug from my hands and setting it on the coffee table.
He took both of my cold hands into his large, warm palms.
"I should have left more men here tonight," Luca said softly, his dark eyes filled with a deep, haunting guilt. "If I had been two minutes later..."
"You came back," I whispered, looking directly into his eyes. "You came back and you saved us."
"You shouldn't have had to be saved," Luca murmured, his thumbs gently tracing the back of my knuckles. "You came into this house to earn an honest living to support your mother. You didn't ask to be dragged into my violent world."
"I don't regret a single second of it," I said, my voice steady and clear. "If I had to go back to that afternoon at the kennel gate, knowing everything that would happen... I would still stand in front of that van. I would still protect Bruno. Because it brought me to you."
Luca froze.
The silence in the room became thick, charged with an intensity that made the crackling fire seem distant.
Luca reached up, his large, warm hand cupping the side of my face. His thumb gently brushed across my lower lip.
"Emma," he whispered, his voice rich and low. "Do you have any idea what you've done to me?"
"What do you mean?" I breathed, my heart hammering against my ribs.
"For ten years, I believed that everyone in my life was here for a transaction," Luca said, his eyes searching every detail of my face. "My associates wanted power. The politicians wanted money. Vanessa wanted status. I thought loyalty was a fairy tale told to children."
He leaned in closer, his forehead resting gently against mine.
"And then you walked into my dining room with blood on your back, refusing to betray an old dog, willing to lose your entire livelihood just to keep a helpless creature safe."
"Luca..."
"You are the only real thing in my life, Emma," he murmured against my lips. "The only thing I care about protecting."
When his lips met mine, the entire world fell away.
The kiss was deep, passionate, and filled with a fierce, possessive tenderness that stole the breath from my lungs. All the fear, the violence, the coldness of the winter night vanished, replaced by a consuming heat that rushed through my veins.
My hands found their way into his thick, dark hair, pulling him closer. He wrapped his strong arms around my waist, lifting me effortlessly against him as if I were the most precious treasure on earth.
When we finally parted, breathless, Luca rested his hand against the side of my neck, his thumb feeling the rapid pulse beneath my skin.
"Come with me," Luca said softly, standing up and offering me his hand. "There is something you need to see."
He led me out of the master suite and down the grand staircase, bypassing the first floor entirely and leading me down a hidden stone spiral staircase beneath the wine cellar.
At the bottom was a heavy, reinforced steel vault door equipped with a biometric retinal scanner.
Luca leaned into the scanner. The heavy locks disengaged with a deep mechanical thud, and the thick door swung open.
Inside was not an armory of weapons or stacks of illicit cash.
It was a beautiful, climate-controlled archive filled with hand-carved wooden furniture, vintage oil paintings, handwritten recipe books, and dozens of photo albums.
In the center of the room, on a marble pedestal, sat an exquisite, hand-crafted gold music box inlaid with mother-of-pearl.
"This was my mother's private sanctuary," Luca said, leading me inside. "When she died, I locked everything away. I couldn't bear to look at it. Vanessa wanted to sell all of it to an antique dealer in New York."
Luca walked to the pedestal and opened the lid of the music box. A sweet, haunting Italian lullaby began to play.
Inside the lid was an inscription written in delicate gold script:
To the woman who brings warmth back into this house. Love unconditionally, protect fiercely.
Luca reached inside the velvet lining of the box and pulled out a stunning, antique platinum ring featuring an exquisite, flawless cushion-cut emerald surrounded by a halo of brilliant diamonds.
"My mother designed this ring before she passed," Luca said, turning to face me. "She told me, 'Luca, do not give this to a woman who loves your name. Give it to the woman who loves your soul.'"
He took my left hand in his.
"Emma Collins... you gave me back my mother's memory. You saved my family. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife, and the true lady of this house?"
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled over my cheeks.

"Yes," I sobbed, throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes, Luca! A thousand times yes!"
He slipped the emerald ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly.
