Chapter 10 - THE WHISPER IN THE SHADOWS

Two months passed in a blur of professional triumph and quiet, simmering intimacy.

Liam was back on his feet, walking without a cane, and attending classes online while living comfortably in the Elm Street apartment.

The Moretti Foundation had successfully funded three new community health clinics on the south side, earning Chloe praise in the local press as a rising civic star.

And Victor... Victor remained her anchor, steady and protective.

However, in a city like Chicago, peace was always a fragile illusion.

Late one Tuesday night, Chloe was working late in her foundation office, reviewing grant applications for the upcoming quarter.

The private elevator chime pinged down the hall.

She looked up at the clock on the wall. 11:15 PM.

The heavy oak doors of her office pushed open without a knock.

It wasn't Victor.

It was a man she had never seen before—tall, wearing an expensive camel-hair coat, his face scarred by an old jagged line running from his left ear down to his jawline.

Behind him stood two armed guards blocking the doorway.

"Miss Bennett, I presume," the man said, his voice smooth like oiled glass. "Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Julian Vance. Head of the New York syndicate."

Chloe’s heart skipped a beat, but she forced herself to stand up straight, keeping her voice level. "You're trespassing in a private foundation office, Mr. Vance. Security has already been alerted."

Julian Vance let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Security? My dear girl, your security detail is currently tied up in the underground parking garage sipping coffee laced with a very effective paralytic."

He stepped closer to her desk, resting his palms on the polished mahogany.

"Victor Costello thinks he can run this city like his personal fiefdom," Julian hissed, his eyes turning cold and predatory. "He thinks cutting off Caldwell and cleaning up the south side makes him a philanthropist. But he forgot one simple rule: empires built on blood always demand a sacrifice."

"What do you want?" Chloe demanded, her hands trembling slightly beneath the edge of the desk.

"I want a message delivered to your precious boyfriend," Julian smiled coldly. "Tell him that the New York docks are open for our shipments by Friday morning, or the next person who dies in a hospital waiting room won't be some nameless beggar... it will be your brother."

May you like

Julian turned on his heel, signaling his guards, and walked out of the office as smoothly as he had entered.
