Chapter 5 - THE AFTERMATH IN THE KITCHEN

In the cavernous, stainless-steel kitchen of the Gilded Stag, the staff stood frozen around the prep tables.
Martin, the floor manager, was wiping down a cutting board with a cloth he hadn't moved in three minutes.
Chloe stood by the sink, clutching a dry dish towel so hard her knuckles were translucent.
The swinging doors pushed open.
Victor Costello walked in, followed by Gabriel.
Every head in the kitchen bowed instantly. Nobody spoke.
Victor walked past the line cooks, past the pastry station, and stopped two feet from Chloe.
He didn't look like a mob boss in this light; he looked like a man who owned the entire world and carried it with effortless grace.
"You're finished with your shift, Chloe," Victor said gently.
"Mr. Costello... I don't know how to thank you," she whispered, her voice trembling. "If he ruins my life—if the committee retaliates—"
"The committee won't do anything," Victor said, cutting her off with absolute finality. "Richard Caldwell will announce his immediate resignation tomorrow morning due to 'health reasons.' By tomorrow afternoon, he’ll be boarding a flight to a very quiet ranch in Arizona where he won't be bothering anyone ever again."
He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, heavy brass key on a leather ring.
"What is this?" she asked, looking down at it.
"The apartment above the florist shop on Elm Street," Victor said. "Three bedrooms, secure parking, fully paid lease for the next ten years. Your brother can recover there in peace, away from the south side tenements."
Chloe shook her head, tears spilling over her lashes. "I can't accept this, Mr. Costello. It's too much. I'm just a waitress."
"You are a survivor, Chloe," Victor corrected softly, placing the key gently onto the stainless-steel counter beside her hand. "And in my world, survivors are the only people worth investing in."

He turned on his heel, signaling Gabriel, and walked out through the back service door into the rainy night.
